The Early Morning Call

Waking up at 2 AM is not something I typically look forward to, but for the promise of a breathtaking sunrise over Mt Batur, I was willing to make an exception. As a digital nomad, my schedule is usually flexible, but this adventure required a bit of discipline. I was picked up by Emon, our driver, who was as punctual as he was friendly. The drive to the base of Mt Batur was smooth, and Emon’s local knowledge made the journey both informative and enjoyable.

Upon arrival, we switched to a jeep for the next leg of our journey. Having trekked up Mt Batur before, I opted for the jeep this time to save some energy for the summit. The jeep ride was exhilarating, offering a different perspective of the landscape that I hadn’t experienced on foot. The Climb with Yus

We were dropped off about a quarter of the way up, where we met our guide, Yus. Equipped with torches and walking sticks, we began our ascent. Yus was a gem, full of stories and local insights that made the climb as enriching as it was challenging. His guidance was invaluable, especially in the pre-dawn darkness where every step required careful attention.

The climb was invigorating, and the camaraderie with fellow travelers added to the experience. Yus knew the best spots for photos, capturing moments that would later serve as cherished memories. As we reached the summit, the sky began to lighten, and the anticipation of the sunrise was palpable.

Sunrise and Beyond

At the summit, we were treated to a simple yet satisfying breakfast of banana sandwiches and boiled eggs. It was the perfect fuel after the climb, and as we sat there, the first rays of sunlight began to peek over the horizon. The view was nothing short of spectacular, a reward that made the early wake-up call worthwhile.

After soaking in the sunrise, Yus took us on a brief tour around the summit, sharing more about the area’s history and geology. We managed to beat the crowds on our descent, making the journey down as smooth as the one up. The entire experience was seamless, thanks to the excellent coordination by Emon and Yus.
