- Historic City of Ayutthaya - This once magnificent capital city, located 80 km from Ayutthaya, was destroyed by the Burmese army in 1767 and is now a UNESCO World Heritage site. Many palaces, temples, and chedis still stand. In 1782, Ayutthaya became the capital of Thailand. Key attractions include the large bronze statues of Vihara Phra Mongkhon Bophit, Wat Phra Sri Sanphet, and Wat Yai Chai Mang Khon.
- Vihara Phra Mongkhon Bophit - This large bronze seated Buddha image, Phra Mongkhon Bophit, is one of the largest in Thailand, measuring 9.5 meters across the lap and 12.5 meters in height. The Buddha is seated in the Subduing Mara position. During Ayutthaya’s second fall, the building and image were severely damaged by fire. The current Vihara and Buddha image were reconstructed and renovated during King Rama V’s reign. The open area east of the Vihara was once Sanam Luang, where royal cremation ceremonies were held.
- Wat Yai Chai Mang Khon - Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon is one of Ayutthaya’s most significant temples, with a rich history. Unlike many other ancient sites in Ayutthaya, it remains an active temple where monks reside. Thai people visit to pay respects to Buddha and honor King Naresuan the Great, one of Thailand’s most revered kings.
- Wat Phra Sri Sanphet - Located on the city island in Ayutthaya’s World Heritage park in Pratu Chai Sub-district, Wat Phra Sri Sanphet has been a national historic site since 5 March 1935. This monastery was Ayutthaya’s most important temple and was situated within the Grand Palace grounds. It served as a model for Bangkok’s Temple of the Emerald Buddha.
- Temple of the Reclining Buddha (Wat Lokayasutharam) - Wat Lokaya Sutha, “the temple of the Earth,” is near the northwest tip of the historical island, close to the old Royal Palace and Wat Phra Si Sanphet. The monastery’s highlight is its 42-meter-long Reclining Buddha image, typically draped in orange cloth. Apart from the central prang, which is in good condition, little more than the base of the main buildings remains.
- Wat Mahathat - Wat Mahathat (Temple of the Great Relics) is almost at the center of Ayutthaya. Besides being the symbolic center where the Buddha’s relics were enshrined, it was also the residence of the Supreme Patriarch or leader of the Thai Buddhist monks. The temple is believed to have been built during the 14th century A.D. (early Ayutthaya period).
- Bang Pa In Palace - Bang Pa-in Palace is an ancient palace from the Ayutthaya era. Built by King Prasart Thong, it was later rebuilt by King Mongkut after being abandoned for a long time. The palace is divided into two zones: the inner zone for the royal family as a resting place and the outer zone open to the public and tourists.
After a delightful day, guests return to Bangkok at 5:00 pm.
