Born in Delaware in 1906, Thompson briefly worked with the Office of Strategic Services (the precursor to the CIA) in Thailand during WWII. After the war, he settled in Bangkok, where the handmade silk of his neighbors captured his attention and entrepreneurial spirit. He sent samples to fashion houses in Milan, London, and Paris, gradually establishing a loyal global clientele.
- Jim Thompson Surawong Road - Jim Thompson House - This charming garden-enclosed compound on the bank of the Saen Saeb Canal might have remained unnoticed if not for the legacy of Jim Thompson, a middle-aged American. His exquisite residential enclave, consisting of six traditional Thai teakwood houses relocated from Ayutthaya and Bangkok’s Ban Krua community, reflects Jim Thompson’s 30-year passion for Southeast Asian art and cultural heritage.
- Suan Pakkad Palace Museum - Suan Pakkad Palace offers glimpses of a Thailand that many thought had disappeared from Bangkok. Its name, meaning ‘cabbage patch,’ refers to its past when the land was just that. Today, it is a beautifully maintained tropical garden with tranquil ponds surrounding eight traditional Thai houses, each filled with fine arts, antiques, and curiosities belonging to Prince and Princess Chumbhot.
