Setting Sail to Surin Islands

The sun was just beginning to peek over the horizon as I found myself in the back of a minivan, cruising through the sleepy streets of Khao Lak. The anticipation of the day ahead was palpable, and I couldn’t help but feel a familiar thrill coursing through my veins. As a former professional surfer, the ocean has always been my playground, and today, I was about to dive into a new adventure: snorkeling around the pristine Surin Islands with the SeaStar Andaman crew.

Upon arrival at Nam Khem Pier, I was greeted by the warm smiles of Patee and his team. Their enthusiasm was infectious, and after a light breakfast, we were briefed on the day’s itinerary. The crew’s attention to detail was impressive, ensuring we were well-prepared for the journey ahead. With snorkeling gear and towels in hand, we boarded the speedboat, ready to explore the unspoiled beauty of the Surin Islands.

Discovering the Moken Sea Gypsies

Our first stop was the Moken Village, home to the nomadic sea gypsies known as the “Chao Leh” or “The Sea People.” As we stepped onto the island, I was struck by the simplicity and harmony of their way of life. The Moken people have a deep connection with the ocean, much like myself, and it was fascinating to learn about their traditions and survival skills.

I wandered through the village, admiring the handcrafted souvenirs and chatting with the locals. The Moken’s stories of life at sea resonated with me, reminding me of my own adventures on the waves. After a brief visit, we were back on the boat, heading to our first snorkeling spot. The water was a mesmerizing shade of turquoise, and as I slipped beneath the surface, I was greeted by a vibrant underwater world teeming with life.

Snorkeling in Paradise

The Surin Islands are renowned for their stunning coral reefs, and they did not disappoint. Our first snorkeling stop was a kaleidoscope of colors, with schools of fish darting around the coral gardens. The SeaStar Andaman crew were attentive, ensuring everyone was comfortable and providing interesting facts about the marine life we encountered.

After a delicious buffet lunch on the island, we continued our snorkeling adventure at two more breathtaking locations. Each stop offered a unique glimpse into the underwater ecosystem, from playful clownfish to graceful sea turtles. The final snorkeling spot was a true highlight, with crystal-clear waters and an abundance of marine life.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way back to the pier, the speedboat cutting through the waves with ease. Despite the choppy seas, the journey was exhilarating, and I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the experience. Back on land, we were treated to a delightful buffet dinner, and I took a moment to reflect on the day’s adventures.
