- Crowfoot Glacier - Named by early explorers for its resemblance to a crow’s foot, the Crowfoot Glacier remains a breathtaking sight despite one of its “toes” having receded. Perched above Bow Lake, it offers incredible photo opportunities along the Icefields Parkway.
The magnificent Crowfoot Glacier can be admired from a viewpoint on the renowned Icefields Parkway, approximately 34 km (21 mi) north of Lake Louise. It is attached to the northeastern side of Crowfoot Mountain, overlooking Bow Lake. The glacier’s meltwater contributes to the Bow River, which flows from Banff National Park through Calgary to the Alberta prairies.
- Bow Lake - Bow Lake is one of the many picturesque lakes along the Icefields Parkway and a favored stop for visitors to Banff National Park in Alberta, Canada. The Canadian Rockies are renowned for their stunning landscapes and lakes, and Bow Lake is a top recommendation for a refreshing stop along the Icefields Parkway.
A short walk along the lakeshore trail offers a family-friendly hike, or you can embark on longer hikes around Bow Lake for a more comprehensive experience. Whatever you choose, don’t miss the beauty of Bow Lake.
- Highway - Enjoy the drive time between attractions, taking in the stunning mountain views along Highway 93, famous for its breathtaking views of the Rocky Mountains.
- Columbia Icefield Discovery Centre - Experience the power of nature on the Glacier Adventure, a must-do in the Canadian Rockies. At the heart of the Icefields Parkway lies one of the largest non-polar ice fields in the world. Here, you can step out and walk on the glacier, fill your water bottle with pure snowmelt, and travel on a massive Ice Explorer to experience the Athabasca Glacier firsthand. Then, take an exhilarating walk along the glass-floored Glacier Skywalk at the cliff’s edge.
- Columbia Icefield Skywalk - Venture beyond nature’s edge and immerse yourself in an awe-inspiring interpretive experience in one of the world’s most unique ecosystems. Discover the immense power of glaciology from a fully accessible, cliff-edge walkway leading to a glass-floored observation platform 280 m (918 ft) above the Sunwapta Valley. From ice-capped peaks to vast glacier-formed valleys, the Columbia Icefield Skywalk offers a front-row seat to nature’s grand performance. Located in a national park, there are ample opportunities for wildlife sightings, including mountain goats and, if fortunate, a bald eagle soaring through the sky.
- Highway - As you drive back to Calgary, enjoy the beautiful views along Highway 93 once more, appreciating the park’s scenery in a different light at a different time of day.
- Peyto Lake - Peyto Lake, a glacier-fed lake in Banff National Park, is near the Icefields Parkway. Named after Bill Peyto, an early trail guide and trapper, the lake is nestled in a valley of the Waputik Range, between Caldron Peak, Peyto Peak, and Mount Jimmy Simpson, at an elevation of 1,860 m (6,100 ft). During summer, glacial rock flour flows into the lake, giving it a unique bright turquoise color. This vibrant hue makes it a popular subject for illustrated books, and the area is a favored sightseeing spot. The lake is best viewed from Bow Summit, the highest point on the Icefields Parkway. Peyto Lake is the source of the Mistaya River, which flows northwest from the lake’s outflow.
- Herbert Lake - Herbert Lake offers stunning views of the lake and snow-capped mountains. A less-traveled trail with excellent mountain views begins at the Herbert Lake parking area. The trailhead can be tricky to locate, so downloading offline maps is recommended to stay on course.
The trail is well-defined and easy to follow once past the trailhead, with a few gentle inclines. It provides multiple viewpoints of the lake and runs alongside it for most of the trail.
- Highway - Enjoy the drive back to Banff and Calgary.
