The park is located on the former site of Klong Prem Prison, built on the royal initiative of King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) in 1890, modeled on HM Brixton Prison in the London Borough of Lambeth, United Kingdom. The prison changed its name several times, most recently in 1972, renamed Bangkok Remand Prison. Crown Prince Vajiralongkorn (later King Maha Vajiralongkorn (Rama X)) presided over the official opening of the Rommaninat Park and Prison Museum on 17 August 1999.
