Originally, it featured just a single handrail and sparse wooden slats, making it quite hazardous and appealing to thrill-seekers. Today, the bridge has been significantly improved for safety while maintaining the excitement of crossing. Situated along the North Antrim Coast, it spans approximately 100 feet above the Atlantic Ocean’s waters.

Recorded in the Irish Annals as Dun Sobhairce, Dunseverick Castle was first fortified by the ancient chieftain Sobhairce around the 5th century AD, possibly earlier. By the 7th century AD, it was occupied by the Dál Riada, a tribal group with maritime ties between northeast Ireland and western Scotland. It later became a center for the Earls of Ulster around 1250–1350 AD and a stronghold for the O’Cahan’s and later the MacDonnells from 1560 AD.

Saint Patrick and Dunseverick

Legend holds that Saint Patrick visited Dunseverick Castle, baptizing Olcán, who became a Bishop of Ireland. The northern site area features an oval depression of wet ground, believed to be a holy well, now known as St Patrick’s Well.
