• Madu Ganga Biodiversity Area - Discover the Madu River Boat Safari, an International Ramsar Wetland. The Madu River Safari, surrounded by swampy marshlands and mangrove forests, spans over 61 hectares, equivalent to more than 150 acres. This area hosts 14 out of the 24 species of mangroves, which play a crucial role in preventing erosion. The importance of these mangroves was highlighted during the December 2004 tsunami, as they acted as a natural barrier, protecting the region. The extensive mangrove growth has led to a chain of ecological benefits, resulting in fertile soil that supports a rich variety of wetland plants. Over 300 species, including 19 endemic ones, have been identified here.

• Kosgoda Sea Turtle Conservation Project - Kosgoda is renowned for its sea turtle conservation project, managed by the Wildlife Protection Society of Sri Lanka. Established in 1988, the project aims to prevent the extinction of Sri Lanka’s turtles. Since its inception, approximately 3.5 million baby turtles have been released into the wild. The hatchery compensates fishermen for eggs collected at night along the sandy beach. Although the main laying season is from October to April, some eggs, primarily from green turtles, are found year-round. The hatchery buries the eggs in sand, and after about 50 days, the hatchlings are released into the sea at night. Only about one in 1,000 turtles reaches maturity. The Kosgoda turtle hatchery also maintains tanks for injured or disabled turtles, including albino turtles that would not survive in the wild.

• Hikkaduwa Beach - Located 98 km south of Colombo, Hikkaduwa Beach is a lively coastal town 14 km from Galle. It was the first of Sri Lanka’s stunning beaches to be discovered by tourists in the 1960s. Snorkeling and diving in the clear waters are popular activities, offering an eco-friendly way to observe the vibrant fish. The coral sanctuary along Hikkaduwa’s coast is a large, shallow body of water enclosed by a reef, adorned with layers of multicolored corals and home to numerous brightly colored fish. Off the beach, there are small islets surrounded by beautiful coral formations.

• Galle Fort - Galle Dutch Fort, located in the Bay of Galle on Sri Lanka’s southwest coast, was initially constructed in 1588 by the Portuguese and later extensively fortified by the Dutch in the 17th century from 1649 onwards. This historical, archaeological, and architectural heritage monument has maintained its polished appearance for over 423 years, thanks to extensive restoration by the Archaeological Department of Sri Lanka. The fort boasts a rich history and today hosts a multi-ethnic and multi-religious community. The Sri Lankan government and many Dutch property owners within the fort aim to make it one of the modern wonders of the world. Recognized by UNESCO, the fort is inscribed as a cultural heritage UNESCO World Heritage Site under criteria IV, for its unique display of European architecture and South Asian traditions.
