- Gobustan Rock Art - Located less than an hour’s drive from Baku (60 km) in eastern Azerbaijan, the Gobustan Preserve boasts over 6,000 ancient petroglyphs, with the oldest estimated to be around 40,000 years old. These carvings illustrate people, animals, dance and hunting rituals, battle scenes, and camel caravans, offering a unique glimpse into prehistoric life in the region. Visitors can also explore the ‘gaval dash’ musical stone, which produces a tambourine-like sound when struck with smaller stones, and see an inscription left by a Roman legion in the 1st century AD. The on-site museum provides excellent explanations and insights into these fascinating discoveries.
- Mud Volcanoes - Did you know that Azerbaijan is home to approximately 350 of the world’s 800 known mud volcanoes? Most are found in the Gobustan region, with some recognized as natural monuments and national resources of Azerbaijan.
- Yanardag State Historical, Cultural and Natural Reserve - Known historically as the Land of Fire due to its abundant oil and gas resources, Azerbaijan’s natural fires have influenced local beliefs and traditions for millennia. One such fire can be seen 25 kilometers from Baku at Yanardagh, or ‘Burning Mountain,’ in the village of Mahammadli. Here, natural subterranean gas continuously fuels a fire on the mountain’s surface. To preserve Yanardagh and attract visitors, it was designated a historical, cultural, and natural reserve in 2007.
- Ateshgah - Fire Temple - Situated on the Absheron Peninsula near Surakhani village, 30 km from Baku, the Ateshgah fire-worshipping temple has served as a shrine for Zoroastrians, Hindus, and Sikhs at various times. The current structures date back to the 17th century and feature a pentagonal complex with an open courtyard and a temple altar, which was a pilgrimage site for Indian fire-worshippers. Today, the complex operates as a well-curated museum and is often visited alongside Yanardagh, the Burning Mountain, to explore Azerbaijan’s fiery heritage.
- Heydar Aliyev Cultural Center - A photo stop will be made at the Heydar Aliyev Center. Originally built in 2005 and extensively restored in 2010, the center continues to honor the national leader Heydar Aliyev. It houses materials about his life and work, as well as hosting “the Young Friends” and “Skillful Hands” clubs, along with English language and fine arts courses.
