• Palace of the Shirvanshahs - Built in the 15th century in Baku for the rulers of Shirvan, this palace complex was established when the nation’s capital moved from Shemakha to Baku.

The complex features a two-story palace building, a tomb, a mosque, the divanhane, the mausoleum of Sayyid Yahya Bakuvi, a bath, the eastern portal, and the Murad Gate (16th century). The main palace building was initiated in 1411 by Shirvanshah Sheikh Ibrahim I and continued by his son, Shirvanshah Khalilullah I. The design is notable for its simplicity, sunny tones, and unique expressiveness, with terrazzo lattice shebeke on the upper windows and slits on the lower floors. The two-story palace contains about fifty rooms of various sizes and shapes, connected by three narrow spiral staircases. Of the 25 rooms on the second floor, only 16 remain.

The ground floor (27 rooms), used by servants and for storage, remains as it was in the 15th century.

The facade facing the front yard is more austere compared to the richer designs of other buildings. A mosque is located near the palace.

Under the minaret’s stalactite belt is an inscription: “…the greatest Sultan Khalil-Ullah I ordered the construction of this minaret. May Allah exalt the days of his rule and reign. The year of eight hundred and forty-five (1441-1442).” Many Middle Eastern palaces had special facilities for receiving ambassadors and meetings, known as “Divan-Khane” (State Council).

The Divan-Khane of the Shirvanshah palace complex is one of Azerbaijan’s most beautiful architectural monuments. The slender portal, serving as the main entrance, is adorned with a richly ornamented stalactite semi-dome and inscriptions. This portal is considered one of the most beautiful among Baku’s monuments and similar structures in Iran and Asia Minor.

In 1964, the complex was declared a museum and placed under state protection. Since then, this unique Azerbaijani architectural monument has become a popular tourist site.

• Miniature Books - The Museum of Miniature Books, located in the old city - Icheri Sheher, is recognized by the Guinness Book of Records for having the largest collection of miniature books. Created by Zarifa Salahova over 30 years, this unique museum opened on April 2, 2002. It houses over 5,600 books from 66 countries. Entrance to the Miniature Books Museum is free.
• Juma Mosque - Many of Baku’s architectural monuments were built on ancient pagan sites. The Maiden Tower, for example, stands on a former pagan temple site. The basement of Sabail Castle contains fragments of older buildings. The Juma Mosque in Icheri-sheher is another such monument. Built in 1899 with funds from Baku philanthropist Khadja Shikhali Dadashev, the mosque was constructed on the site of a fire worshipers’ temple. Only four uncoated arches remain from the old building, believed to belong to the temple. Modern archaeologists suggest a pagan sacred center once existed at the Juma Mosque site, where fire worshipers gathered.

In the 14th century, the pagan temple was converted into a mosque. An inscription on the mosque reads: “in the month of Rajab in the year 709 Hijri (1309) Amir Sharaf al-Din Mahmud ordered to update this mosque.” In the 15th century, a minaret was added to the mosque’s north side. By the late 19th century, the old mosque was replaced by the new Juma Mosque.

The Juma Mosque is small, with a men’s hall and women’s prayer rooms. Its conical dome, supported by four central pillars, is particularly noteworthy.
