- Qala Archaeological and Ethnographic Museum Complex - The Gala State Historical Ethnographic Reserve is a museum complex located in Baku, Azerbaijan. It features three distinct types of museums: the open-air Museum of Archaeology and Ethnography, the partly open-air Castle Museum, and the Museum of Antiques.
Spanning 1.5 hectares, the museum showcases rock paintings, pottery, household items, jewelry, weapons, and coins from ancient Azerbaijan. It houses over 2,000 archaeological and architectural monuments, including mounds, ancient settlement sites, and burial places dating back thousands of years. Through archaeological excavations, visitors can gain insights into the lifestyle of Azerbaijani people from ancient times to the Middle Ages.
The museum is a 30-minute drive from the city center. Visitors typically spend at least 90 minutes here before heading to the Carpet Museum, which is also 30 minutes away from the Gala Reserve.

Azerbaijan National Carpet Museum - After observing the live weaving process of Absheron carpets at the Gala Reserve, visitors proceed to the Carpet Museum. This museum exhibits a comprehensive collection of Azerbaijani carpet weaving art from the Middle Ages to the present. The museum’s collection includes over 10,000 items, such as ceramics, 14th-century metal works, Bronze Age jewelry, carpets and carpet items from the 17th to 20th centuries, national garments, embroidery, and modern applied art. The building’s design resembles a rolled carpet.
-
Museum of Archaeology and Ethnography - Established in 1976 in Baku’s Old City, the Museum of Archaeology and Ethnography underwent restoration in 2008, expanding its exhibitions to 2,000 artifacts. The museum displays authentic archaeological findings that cover all stages of Azerbaijani cultural development, from the Stone Age to the late Middle Ages. Exhibits provide detailed information about primitive sites, living houses in Azerbaijan, settlements of cattle breeders and farmers, historical and material culture of ancient states, gravestone monuments, and ancient Azerbaijani arts, economy, lifestyle, and moral values.
Visitors spend 20 minutes here with a guided explanation before continuing to Gobustan, which is at least an hour from the Old City.
- Gobustan Rock Art Cultural Landscape - After exploring the archaeological and ethnographic materials, visitors head to the archaeological site in the Gobustan region to experience ancient times firsthand. The Gobustan Museum of Petroglyphs, an indoor and outdoor museum, is located approximately 65 kilometers (a 1-hour drive) from Baku. An expert guide provides detailed information at the Museum and Rock Art Open Air Museum, where visitors can marvel at prehistoric rock drawings and petroglyphs carved by primitive men on cave walls and rocks, reflecting the culture, economy, and worldview of ancient Azerbaijani people.
The general tour duration in this area is 90 minutes. The tour concludes here, and visitors return to the hotel or meeting point. The entire tour, including driving and sightseeing activities, lasts 6-7 hours.
