- Ateshgah - Fire Temple - Often referred to as the “Fire Temple of Baku,” Ateshgah is a fortress-like religious temple located in Surakhani town, a suburb of Baku. This pentagonal complex, featuring a courtyard surrounded by cells for monks and a central tetrapillar-altar, was constructed in the 17th and 18th centuries. It was deserted in the late 19th century, likely due to the decline of the Indian population in the vicinity. The Baku Ateshgah served as a pilgrimage and philosophical hub for Zoroastrians from the Northwestern Indian Subcontinent, who engaged in trade with the Caspian region via the renowned “Grand Trunk Road.” The Temple of Fire “Ateshgah” was proposed for inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list in 1998.
- Yanardag State Historical, Cultural and Natural Reserve - Yanardag is a natural gas fire that perpetually burns on a hillside on the Absheron Peninsula near the Caspian Sea, close to Baku. Flames shoot up to 3 meters (9.8 ft) from a thin, porous sandstone layer. The Yanar Dag fires are attributed to hydrocarbon gases seeping from beneath the earth’s surface. Alexandre Dumas, during one of his visits, described a similar fire he witnessed in the region within one of the Zoroastrian fire temples built around it. Only a few fire mountains exist globally today, with most located in Azerbaijan. Due to the high concentration of natural gas beneath the Absheron Peninsula, natural flames have burned there since ancient times and were documented by historical writers like Marco Polo.
Visitors frequently come to witness these ever-burning flames and enjoy a cup of tea at the nearby café. It’s a captivating sight, especially at dusk. It’s easy to see how such eternal fires, fueled by the earth itself, became objects of reverence. The arrival of the Zoroastrians in Azerbaijan nearly 2,000 years ago is closely linked to these geological phenomena, and one theory suggests that the name “Azerbaijan” itself is derived from the Persian word for “fire.” The fire worship cult was significant throughout the pre-Islamic history of this region.
