Bagamoyo was one of the key commercial hubs on the East African Coast and was notorious as a major departure port for slaves from the inland areas. The town also became the initial capital of German East Africa from 1886 to 1891 when German colonizers arrived. It holds immense importance in global history as a gateway for Arab and European missionaries, blazers, and traders arriving in East and Central Africa, as well as a significant landmark in the brutal history of the slave trade.
