Nusa Penida, along with its nearby islands Lembongan and Ceningan, is known as a bird sanctuary, and their establishment followed the traditional regulations of Balinese villages.[3] The valuable initiative of establishing a sanctuary can be attributed to the Friends of the National Parks Foundation (FNPF).[4]
In 2006, all existing 35 villages on the islands unanimously agreed to incorporate bird protection into their traditional ‘awig-awig’ regulations, a number that has since increased to 41 villages. The FNPF took great strides since then to rehabilitate and reintroduce various indigenous birds back into the wild. The most notable contribution has been towards saving the highly endangered Bali starling, a species only found in Bali, whose population had sadly dwindled to a little under 10 by 2005. Due to concerted efforts by the FNPF, specifically a two-year-long project where 64 locally bred caged birds were carefully rehabilitated and released on Nusa Penida, the number of these beautiful birds rose impressively to over a hundred by 2009. Other bird species that have been released include the Java sparrow, Mitchell’s lorikeet, and sulphur-crested cockatoo.
