Although a smaller temple existed earlier, it was significantly expanded by Javanese sage Empu Kuturan in the 11th century. Another sage, Dang Hyang Nirartha, is credited with constructing the padmasana shrines and is said to have attained moksha here, giving the temple its epithet Luhur.

The temple is home to monkeys (Macaca fascicularis), known for snatching visitors’ belongings. They can often be persuaded to trade items for fruit, although this behavior encourages further theft. Studies by scientists and primate behavior experts suggest that these monkeys learn bartering behavior, which is passed down to their young. New groups of Macaque monkeys introduced to the area quickly adapt and learn from the locals.
