Bacalar’s Seven Colors: A Surfer’s Tranquil Escape

Drawn by the allure of Bacalar’s vibrant hues, I embarked on a sun-soaked adventure to the “Lagoon of Seven Colors.” Join me as I dive into crystal-clear cenotes, savor local flavors, and soak in the laid-back vibes of this enchanting destination.

Setting Sail on Bacalar’s Crystal Waters

The sun was just beginning to rise as I found myself on the deck of Royal Caribbean’s Enchantment of the Seas, eagerly anticipating the day ahead. Bacalar, often referred to as the “Lagoon of Seven Colors,” had been on my radar for quite some time. As a professional surfer, I’ve spent countless hours chasing waves across Central America, but the allure of Bacalar’s tranquil waters and vibrant hues was something I couldn’t resist. Despite a slight delay in docking, the tour company’s seamless communication via WhatsApp kept my spirits high. Once ashore, I was greeted by Francesco, our guide, and Moses, our driver, who would lead us on this sun-soaked adventure.

The drive to Bacalar was a breezy 70 minutes, made all the more enjoyable by the cool comfort of the air-conditioned van. Francesco, with his infectious enthusiasm, shared stories of the region, while Moses navigated the roads with ease. A quick stop at a local street vendor for fresh pineapple and mango was a delightful surprise, setting the tone for the day’s laid-back vibe.

Diving into the Lagoon of Seven Colors

Arriving at the lagoon, I was immediately captivated by the kaleidoscope of blues stretching out before me. We boarded a pontoon boat, and as we glided across the water, the sun danced on the surface, creating a mesmerizing display. Our first stop was Cenote Esmeralda, where the water was so clear it felt like swimming in liquid glass. The refreshing dip was a welcome escape from the heat, and as I floated on my back, I couldn’t help but marvel at the natural beauty surrounding me.

Next, we ventured to Cenote Cocalitos, home to ancient stromatolites. These living stones, some of the oldest forms of life on Earth, added a touch of mystery to the already enchanting landscape. The crew, ever attentive, offered fresh fruit and cold drinks, enhancing the leisurely pace of our journey. As someone who thrives on the ocean’s energy, the lagoon’s serene waters provided a different kind of thrill, one that was both calming and invigorating.

A Taste of Bacalar

After our aquatic escapades, we headed to a local restaurant for lunch. The atmosphere was lively, with live music setting the perfect backdrop for our meal. I opted for beef tacos and horchata, a combination that was as satisfying as a perfect wave. For seafood lovers, the menu boasted an array of fresh fish options, ensuring there was something for everyone.

As the day drew to a close, I reflected on the experience. Bacalar had offered a unique blend of adventure and relaxation, a perfect complement to my usual surf-centric travels. The journey back to the ship was filled with laughter and shared stories, a testament to the camaraderie that had formed among our small group. For those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of port life, Bacalar Lagoon Tour is a must. It’s a chance to immerse yourself in nature’s palette and return with memories as vivid as the lagoon’s seven colors.
