• Qasr Al-Azraq - Among the most significant remnants of human settlement in eastern Jordan are the castles constructed by the Umayyad caliphates during the early Islamic era (7th & 8th centuries CE). During the Umayyad dynasty’s peak, architecture thrived due to cultural exchanges and major trade routes. The Abbasids later overthrew the Umayyads in 750 CE, leading to an evolution in architectural styles, which is also evident in Jordan.

Numerous relics and remains from the early and medieval Islamic periods still stand in Jordan, scattered across the eastern deserts. These ruins, including castles, forts, baths, towers, and fortified structures, are collectively known as the desert castles. The exquisite frescoes, mosaics, and stone and stucco carvings, inspired by Persian and Greco-Roman traditions, reveal life and customs of the 8th century.

It is renowned for the vibrant frescoes on the ceiling and interior walls, depicting hunting scenes, animals, birds, and portraits. The zodiac representation on the domed ceiling of the hot room is one of the earliest surviving depictions of a map. It is a remnant of a larger complex; however, what remains today is a small country cabin without military function. It stands as one of the most significant examples of early Islamic art and architecture.

• Qasr al-Kharrana - After appreciating these frescoes and vaulted chambers, travel to Qasr al-Kharrana, a charming square fortress with rounded turrets and a central courtyard. This castle remains a mystery to historians and archaeologists. Some suggest it was a defensive fort, while others believe it served as a resting place for travelers, a meeting spot, or caravanserai. Remarkably preserved, it is one of Jordan’s most beautiful and atmospheric ancient structures. Admire the architecture and explore the rooms surrounding the courtyard with their decorative niches and pilasters.

• The Cave of the Seven Sleepers - Rejoin your driver and continue to the Cave of the Seven Sleepers. According to ancient legend, this cave (Ahl al Kahf) was a refuge for seven Christian men and their dog, who fled their homes to escape persecution by Roman Emperor Trajan for their faith. They slept there for 309 years, awakening when their spiritual beliefs were no longer persecuted. Today, the cave is a religious and historic site of great significance. It is surrounded by ruins, and the tombs of the men and some remains are still visible inside the cave.
