Great sunset activity - We went in mid Oct, perfect weather. Kayak tour was informative and peaceful being out on the water. Ethan was our guide, made it fun.
Wore bathing suit and chaco’s. Seat gets wet but not soaked. Hat not a bad idea for time bf sun goes down. Water provided, nice touch. Took a ziplock for my phone but was able to take it out and snap pics.

October bats & skyline - Beautiful evening to go kayaking and experience the bat flight. Ethan did a great job sharing information about the bats, Austin skyline, and Lady Bird Lake. Austin info was interesting since we were visiting from out of state and this was our only evening in town.
As for the bats, wow! We are at the end of season and were warned there may not be as many bats since they are starting to migrate. Afterwards we were told that it was a very large (almost full) group that flew out. Upwards to 1.5 million bats is hard to comprehend! It was spectacular and skin crawling at the same time! I was definitely happier to be on the water towards the back of our group rather than closer to being under the bridge or standing on the bridge where the bats fly past. The only negative was not being able to hear Ethan’s comments leading up to the fly out. I was able to listen to another tour guide closer to me.
Kayaking back afterwards beneath the skyline lights and a beautiful night sky was fantastic and not nearly long enough! Beautiful way to end the evening.

A great way to enjoy Austin’s cityscape, sunsets, and its most unique attraction! - I was excited about the tour from the get-go to see the bats, but was pleasantly surprised to learn more local history than I expected! Holden was a great, enthusiastic, and informative tour guide who shared a lot of cool facts about Austin’s cultural history and local development (and bats!). The kayaking itself was pretty light and not too far — definitely approachable for everyone. It was cool to see the bats from a unique vantage point, as well as many others enjoying them on the water and atop the bridge. The sunset colors were amazing too!
I’m very glad I did this tour and highly recommend it as a unique Austin highlight to anyone!

How not to go batty. - This ranks as one of the top, most memorable experiences my husband and I have ever had on a trip tour - but for all the wrong reasons. I am giving this experience 4 stars but I really want to give it 3. I gave it 4 because the issues we had with the trip were due to our own shortcomings, not necessarily the fault of the leader.
We had a LOT of trouble trying to stay with the group because we had NO experience navigating a kayak and ended up separating from the group many times. We missed most of the information about Austin while trying to paddle back to the group. We managed numerous U-turns. By the time we paddled to the bridge and rejoined the group, many bats had come and gone but there really seemed to be but hundreds, not thousands of bats.
We should have been filmed as what NOT to do on a kayak trip. The leader should have had a mic because even when close, we could barely hear him. My husband was so anxious to stay with the group that he was too aggressive with his paddling. We ended up playing bumper-cars with other kayaks instead of drifting along with the group. We should have had a rope to the leader to help us stay up with the group.
The good points. We have never laughed so much at each other and together on any other tourist tour. Mainly due to the flow of the water, we returned to the dock only to realize we couldn't figure out how to get out of the kayak. We were exhausted! and the dock looked like it was a mountain to climb. The staff assisted us by having us roll over out of the kayak and we found ourselves on our backs like two beached whales but laughing hysterically at the adventure. We were soaking wet from water running down the oars into our shirts and filling our pants.
So, overall, it will be remembered fondly. I still suggest a leader use a mic and suggest people who have no experience come early to practice paddling a few feet out and back. Also, maybe a rope to the leader to help those who are as bad at kayaking as we are.
