- Acropolis - The Acropolis of Athens is an ancient fortress situated on a rocky hill above Athens, featuring the remnants of several historically and architecturally significant ancient structures, most notably the Parthenon. The term “acropolis” is derived from the Greek words ἄκρον (akron, “highest point, extremity”) and πόλις (polis, “city”). This term is generic, and there are numerous other acropoleis throughout Greece. In ancient times, the Acropolis of Athens was also referred to as Cecropia, named after the mythical serpent-man Cecrops, believed to be the first king of Athens.
Evidence suggests the hill was inhabited as early as the fourth millennium BC, but it was Pericles (c. 495–429 BC) in the fifth century BC who oversaw the construction of the site’s most significant buildings, including the Parthenon, the Propylaea, the Erechtheion, and the Temple of Athena Nike.
Access: Electric Railway – Metro (“AKROPOLI” station)
- Plaka - Plaka is the oldest neighborhood in Athens. Most streets are closed to cars, though caution is advised for fast-moving motorcycles or delivery trucks. Once a nightclub district, most venues closed when the government banned amplified music in the 1970s to deter undesirable activities. This strategy was successful, transforming Plaka into an area filled with restaurants, jewelry stores, tourist shops, and cafes. Despite its commercialization, it remains a charming neighborhood and arguably the most pleasant in central Athens. While many restaurants cater to tourists, some offer good quality food. Following recommendations in the restaurant section of this guide can lead to enjoyable dining experiences without unpleasant surprises on the bill or health issues before visiting the Acropolis.
- Change of Guards - Location: Syntagma Square
The Evzones, accompanied by a military band, march from their barracks behind the Parliament Building along Vasilissis Sofias Avenue to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, where a ceremonial guard change occurs every hour. The Evzones provide a 24-hour honor guard, with an hourly sentry change performed in slow motion, believed to help restore circulation after standing motionless.
Many smile at the pompoms on the guards’ boots in Athens, but these men are part of the elite light infantry unit, the Evzones.
- Kallimarmaro - The Panathenaic Stadium of Athens, Greece (or Kallimarmaro): Known as the Roman Stadium, the Panathenaic Stadium, or simply Kallimarmaro (meaning made of fine marble). This remarkable stadium is located at the end of Herodes Atticus Street, within walking distance of the Temple of Olympian Zeus, the Arch of Hadrian, and the Acropolis.
- Akadimia (Academy) - The Academy of Athens is Greece’s national academy and the premier research institution in the country. Established in 1926, its founding principles trace back to the historical Academy of Plato, and it operates under the Ministry of Education’s supervision. It is one of three beautiful buildings standing side by side, known to Athenians as “The Trilogy.”
