- Acropolis - THE ACROPOLIS AND ALL ITS TEMPLES AND MONUMENTS. Our day begins at the Acropolis, the heart of ancient Athenian life, surrounded by its impressive ‘cyclopean’ wall, built by the Mycenaeans thousands of years ago. The Acropolis houses the Parthenon and many other incredible monuments. You will first enter through the grand ‘Propylaia,’ behind which once stood a gold-encrusted statue of the Goddess Athena. You will also see the Temple of Athena Nike (or ‘Victory’) from 420 BC, followed by other significant sites such as the mythical Erechtheion, unique in its construction with its iconic Caryatid statues, and the world’s oldest Theatre of Dionysus from the 6th Century BC, which hosted the first performances of ancient plays by Sophocles and Euripides, among others. The impressive and fully renovated Roman theater, Herodius Atticus, completed in AD 161, also on the site, was dedicated to the wife of a wealthy benefactor and still hosts a vibrant public summer program.
- Parthenon - THE PARTHENON. Widely regarded as a masterpiece of science, engineering, and culture, the Parthenon was dedicated to the goddess Athena and originally housed her magnificent statue. Its decorative sculptures are considered some of the pinnacles of classical Greek art, some of which can be viewed in the nearby museum.
- Acropolis Museum - ACROPOLIS MUSEUM. A state-of-the-art museum carefully constructed over excavations that revealed historical layers from Roman houses to Byzantine churches. As you pass the museum, your guide will highlight these remains, bringing to life the history literally beneath your feet during the tour.
- Temple of Olympian Zeus - TEMPLE OF OLYMPIAN ZEUS. This colossal temple in the center of Athens was dedicated to the god Zeus, leader of the Olympian gods. Construction began in the 6th century BC, and the temple housed a richly adorned statue, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world.
- Arch of Hadrian - ARCH OF HADRIAN. A classic triumphal arch built by the ancient Athenians for the Roman Emperor Hadrian, seen together with the Temple of Zeus in the same location.
- Panathenaic Stadium - THE PANATHENAIC STADIUM. Also known as the ‘Kallimarmaro’ stadium, it is one of Athens’ highlights where the classic marathon concludes and the only stadium in the world built entirely of marble.
- Zappeion Hall - ZAPPEION HALL. This iconic landmark in the National Gardens was originally constructed as the first Olympic Village at the start of the modern Olympic Games. It has a fascinating history through the development of modern Athens and once served as a tram hub in the 19th century.
- National Garden - NATIONAL GARDENS OF ATHENS. Originally designed as Royal Gardens in the 19th century, this green and shady oasis connects many of the city’s highlights. Within its winding paths are numerous small delights, including fountains, libraries, ancient ruins, and even a zoo.
- Monument to the Unknown Soldier - CHANGING OF THE GUARDS & TOMB OF THE UNKNOWN SOLDIER. Guarded by the impressive evzones, you can take photos with them (one at a time), and if the tour coincides with the hour, you will witness the impressive changeover ceremony.
- Hellenic Parliament - GREEK PARLIAMENT. The center of government and once a royal palace, it holds significance in the recent history of modern Greece and dominates the spot above Athens’ main square.
- Syntagma Square - SYNTAGMA SQUARE. The main square of Athens, housing the Hellenic Parliament building and the focal point of much of Athenian life and politics. At the start of the pedestrianized shopping thoroughfare and with many other markets and attractions within easy walking distance, this is the perfect spot to end your tour for a break before continuing your day.
