These markets are the heart of Athens’ shopping district and essential for understanding local shopping and food preparation. The fish market is the largest in Europe, handling over 5 tons of fish daily. It’s lively, bustling, and captivating.
• Fruit Market - Discover how Greeks enjoy seasonal fruits and vegetables as you explore the local laiki (farmers market). Discuss the timing of fresh produce consumption and taste some seasonal fruits.
• Evripidou - Explore the delightful spice market, home to numerous local producers’ shops. Visit three different stores: a honey producer, an olive and olive oil producer, and a renowned deli shop. Taste their products and learn about quality olive oil and the role of honey in the Greek diet. Enjoy shopping for souvenirs at the remarkable shops along this street.
• Athens Street - Savor souvlaki at one of our favorite spots near the markets. Enjoy tender meat (or vegetables) on a skewer with Greek yogurt and local wine, marking the first of our two sit-down tasting experiences. Some tours may visit a family-run taverna instead of the souvlaki stop, but all tours include two sit-down stops.
• Athens - Experience the grand finale with a generous meze meal featuring meat, fish, vegetables, beans, and more, showcasing various aspects of Greek cuisine. Enjoy a dessert of Greek yogurt with honey, accompanied by our national drink, Ouzo.
• Evripidou - Participate in a honey tasting at a charming family-owned honey business. Sample different honeys and learn about honey production and its significance in the Greek diet.
• Athens Street - Gather at Athinas Street at Ev Athinas, a quaint pie shop, and begin your tastings with our favorite filo pastry pies and Greek coffee. As you stroll along this bustling shopping street, you’ll notice signs of the food markets and daily shoppers. The scenery shifts as you move away from tourist areas and delve deeper into the local shopping and trading scene. Pass by numerous small food shops offering delicious local products, with opportunities to converse with vendors and shop if desired.

Visit local streets where we see, taste, and shop for cheese, cured meat, fruits, sweets, and spices in vibrant markets full of color, scents, and noise. Sample olives, oil, and honey from a farmer, and enjoy local wine made on site.

4:00 PM tours will catch most of the market as it starts to close. On Sundays, the markets are closed, so we visit a taverna to enjoy traditional food with ouzo and local wine. Visit a delicatessen, a spice shop, and a producer of olive oil and honey. You’ll also savor Greek coffee and yogurt from a local producer.

Over 20 tastings are offered, including sit-down meals of meat and fish on all tours. Learn about Greek culture and meet the locals. Vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options are available. Note: Vegan options are not available on Sundays. Discounted rates are offered for children.
