- Athens - Meet the private driver-guide at the accommodation or port, step into a comfortable, air-conditioned vehicle, and embark on a personalized tour. All transport fees are included, but meals and entrance fees are not. Before starting, discuss with the friendly guide the sights to visit during the tour. As the tour is private, the itinerary is entirely flexible and can be tailored to suit interests and preferences. The guide can also offer insider tips on what to see and do, potentially revealing experiences and places that other visitors might miss.
- Tomb of the Unknown Soldier - Located in front of the Greek Parliament building on Amalias Avenue, the Monument of the Unknown Soldier was constructed in 1929-1930 to honor those who died fighting for Greece. The monument is guarded by the Presidential Guard (Evzones), dressed in traditional 19th-century attire, featuring the distinctive fustanella and tsarouchia. The guard changes every hour, with an official change every Sunday morning, featuring an impressive ritual that attracts many tourists. After the flag-raising and submission at the Acropolis, the Evzones proceed to the Monument of the Unknown Soldier, performing a strictly “choreographed” change in pairs.
- Zappeion - The insightful benefactor Evangelos Zappas funded the construction of a building in 1859 to host exhibitions and services for the first Olympic Games of 1896. After Zappas’ death, the Greek government allocated land next to the National Park. The iconic neoclassical building, featuring a Corinthian-style propylon, impressive gardens, and a harmonious structure, was inaugurated in 1888, designed by Theophilos Hansen. Evangelis Zappas’ head was incorporated into the peristyle of the Megaron as per his wish.
- Acropolis Museum - The Acropolis Museum, one of the world’s most significant, houses unique masterpieces, primarily original works of archaic and classical Greek art, directly linked to the sacred rock of the Acropolis. Visitors can closely view reference works, such as the Caryatids of the Erechtheion and the Parthenon’s sculptural decoration. The museum’s frieze, metopes between columns, temple pediments, and the merging of original sculptures with copies from international museums (British, Louvre) offer a comprehensive view of the Parthenon’s sculptural decoration.
- Acropolis - Next, head to the sacred rock of the Acropolis, a symbol of Athens, dominating the modern city’s center and visible from every corner. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it has been inhabited since prehistoric times and evolved into Athens’ preeminent sanctuary, mainly dedicated to its patron goddess, Athena. At the top stands the Parthenon, the pinnacle of classical architecture, the Propylaea, the Erechtheion, and the temple of Athena Nike. The rock’s slopes feature caves, sanctuaries, and monuments from various eras, including the renowned ancient theater of Dionysus and the Roman Conservatory of Herodes Atticus.
- Ancient Agora of Athens - The Ancient Agora, northwest of the Acropolis, was the city’s hub during classical and Hellenistic times. It housed significant public buildings and sanctuaries, fostering intense administrative, political, judicial, commercial, social, and religious activity. Key monuments include the Stoa of Attalos, now the Museum of the Ancient Agora, the temple of Hephaestus, the Dome, and the Bouleuterion. Notably, over 400 newer buildings were demolished to reveal these monuments.
- Plaka - Plaka and Monastiraki, Athens’ most tourist-friendly areas, captivate with their charming corners while offering history lessons. Plaka’s alleys, reaching the Acropolis rock, the island neighborhood of Anafiotika, blooming bougainvillea, taverns, and tourist shops create an ideal setting for endless walks. Monastiraki is perfect for exploring countless small shops and vendors’ stalls. Traffic peaks every Sunday when the large open-air market, Yusurum, is held here.
- Lykavittos (Mount Lycabettus) - The hill was a rock carried by the goddess Athena, which fell in Athens when she received bad news from a crow. Ride the cable car to the top of Lycabettus, adorned with the church of Agios Georgios, to see the entire Basin and, if the weather permits, the Saronic Gulf. At the rock’s base is the small church of Agios Isidoros. The teleferic fee is 10 euros for a round trip.
- Lake Vouliagmeni - The stunning Lake Vouliagmeni, a site of exceptional natural beauty, is one of Greece’s recognized thermal springs. Its brackish waters maintain a constant temperature year-round (22-29 degrees Celsius) and are continuously renewed by the sea and underground thermal springs, creating ideal conditions for a natural and unique thermal spa experience.
- Temple of Poseidon - Now heading to Cape Sounion, located at the southern tip of the Attic Peninsula. According to Greek mythology, King Aegeus leapt from the cliffs here, believing his son Theseus was dead. Theseus had gone to fight the Minotaur and promised to change his ship’s black sails to white if victorious. Overjoyed by his victory, Theseus forgot to change the sails. Seeing the black sails, his father thought Theseus was dead and took his own life. The Aegean Sea is named after him! At Cape Sounion, admire the temple dedicated to Poseidon, the god of the sea and protector of sailors. Enjoy the breathtaking panoramic view of the Saronic Gulf as sunlight illuminates the temple’s marble columns!
