- Athens - MEETING OUR GUIDE. The guide will be ready to meet at 7 Makrygianni Street, near the Acropolis Metro stop, conveniently located by the Acropolis Main Entrance.
This meeting point offers a perfect view of the Acropolis wall, constructed by the ancient Mycenaean civilization, and serves as an introduction to the Acropolis’s history, significance, and its role in ancient Greek life, along with an overview of the temples and remarkable monuments to be explored.
- Acropolis - THE ACROPOLIS AND ALL ITS TEMPLES AND MONUMENTS. The day begins at the Acropolis, the heart of ancient Athenian life, encircled by its impressive cyclopean wall, built by the Mycenaeans millennia ago. The Acropolis houses the Parthenon and numerous other extraordinary monuments. Entry is through the grand ‘Propylaia,’ behind which once stood a gold-adorned statue of the Goddess Athena. Visitors will also see the Temple of Athena Nike (or ‘Victory’) from 420 BC, followed by other significant sites such as the mythical Erechtheion, notable for its unique construction and iconic Caryatid statues, and the world’s oldest Theatre of Dionysus from the 6th Century BC, which hosted the first performances of ancient plays by Sophocles and Euripides, among others. The impressive and fully restored Roman theater, Herodius Atticus, completed in AD 161, is also on-site, dedicated to the wife of a wealthy benefactor and still hosts a lively public summer program.
- Parthenon - THE PARTHENON. Widely regarded as a masterpiece of science, engineering, and culture, the Parthenon was dedicated to the goddess Athena and originally housed her magnificent statue. Its decorative sculptures are considered highlights of classical Greek art, some of which are displayed in the nearby Museum.
- Acropolis Museum - ACROPOLIS MUSEUM. This state-of-the-art museum is carefully constructed over excavations that uncovered historical layers from Roman houses to Byzantine churches. As the tour passes the Museum, the guide will highlight these remains, bringing history to life beneath your feet.
- Temple of Olympian Zeus - TEMPLE OF OLYMPIAN ZEUS. This colossal temple in the heart of Athens was dedicated to Zeus, the chief of the Olympian gods. Construction began in the 6th century BC, and the temple housed a richly adorned statue, one of the seven wonders of the Ancient World.
- Arch of Hadrian - ARCH OF HADRIAN. A classic triumphal arch built by the Ancient Athenians for the Roman Emperor Hadrian, located alongside the Temple of Zeus.
- Panathenaic Stadium - THE PANATHENAIC STADIUM. Also known as the ‘Kallimarmaro’ stadium, it is a highlight of Athens where the classic Marathon concludes and is the only stadium in the world constructed entirely of marble.
- Zappeion Hall - ZAPPEION HALL. This iconic landmark in the National Gardens was initially built as the first Olympic Village at the start of the Modern Olympic Games. It has a captivating history throughout the development of modern Athens and once served as a tram hub in the 19th century.
- National Garden - NATIONAL GARDENS OF ATHENS. Originally designed as Royal Gardens in the 19th century, this green and shady oasis connects many of the city’s highlights. Within its winding paths are numerous small delights, including fountains, libraries, ancient ruins, and even a zoo.
- Monument to the Unknown Soldier - CHANGING OF THE GUARDS & TOMB OF THE UNKNOWN SOLDIER. Guarded by the impressive evzones, visitors can take photos with them (one at a time), and if the tour coincides with the hour, the impressive changeover ceremony can be witnessed.
- Hellenic Parliament - GREEK PARLIAMENT. The center of government, once a Royal Palace, holds significance in the recent history of modern Greece and dominates the area above Athens’s main square.
- Syntagma Square - SYNTAGMA SQUARE. The main square of Athens, home to the Hellenic Parliament building, is central to much of Athenian life and politics. It marks the beginning of the pedestrianized shopping thoroughfare and is surrounded by many markets and attractions, making it an ideal spot to conclude the tour for a break before continuing the day.
