During the Acropolis tour, you will learn fascinating facts and figures about the Parthenon, such as the restoration of 2,675 tons of architectural elements, with 686 stones reassembled from original fragments, 905 patched with new marble, and 186 parts crafted entirely from new marble. A total of 530 cubic meters of new Pentelic marble were utilized.
A caryatid is a sculpted female figure serving as an architectural support, replacing a column or pillar to support an entablature on her head. The Greek term karyatides means “maidens of Karyai,” an ancient town in the Peloponnese. Karyai was home to a famous temple dedicated to the goddess Artemis in her aspect of Artemis Karyatis: “As Karyatis, she delighted in the dances of the nut-tree village of Karyai, those Karyatides, who in their ecstatic round-dance carried baskets of live reeds on their heads, as if they were dancing plants.”
The New Acropolis Museum

This archaeological museum focuses on findings from the Acropolis archaeological site. Built in 2003, it houses every artifact discovered on the rock and its base, from the Greek Bronze Age to Roman and Byzantine Greece. It is located on the archaeological site of Makrygianni at the lower part of the Acropolis hill.
