- Acropolis - Explore the land where, thousands of years ago, significant aspects of global philosophy, politics, and science were born and thrived. Discover ancient monuments of immense cultural and historical significance and personally experience the grandeur and splendor of ancient Greek times. Begin with the Acropolis, which translates to the edge of the city in Greek, the highest geographical and spiritual point according to the ancient Greeks.
- Parthenon - The Parthenon, the main temple dedicated to the virgin goddess Athena, stands as the eternal symbol of Athenian democracy and Western civilization.
- Propylaea - The Propylaea serves as the monumental entrance to the sacred area dedicated to Athena, the city’s patron goddess. Designed by architect Mnesicles using Pentelic marble, its design was innovative. To the southwest of the Propylaea, on a bastion protecting the main entrance to the Acropolis, is the Ionic temple of Apteros Nike.
- Erechtheion - The Erechtheion is an ancient Greek temple on the north side of the Acropolis of Athens, dedicated to both Athena and Poseidon.
- Temple of Athena Nike - The Temple of Athena Nike, located on the Acropolis of Athens, is dedicated to the goddesses Athena and Nike. Constructed around 420 BC, it is the earliest fully Ionic temple on the Acropolis. It occupies a prominent position on a steep bastion at the southwest corner of the Acropolis, to the right of the entrance, the Propylaea. Unlike the Acropolis proper, a walled sanctuary accessed through the Propylaea, the Victory Sanctuary was open, entered from the Propylaea’s southwest wing and a narrow stair on the north. The bastion’s sheer walls were protected on the north, west, and south by the Nike Parapet, named for its frieze of Nikai celebrating victory and sacrificing to their patronesses, Athena and Nike.
- Theater of Dionysus - The Theatre of Dionysus is an ancient Greek theatre in Athens, situated on the south slope of the Acropolis hill, originally part of the sanctuary of Dionysus Eleuthereus. The first orchestra terrace was built on the site around the mid- to late-sixth century BC, hosting the City Dionysia. The theatre reached its peak in the fourth century BC under the epistates of Lycurgus, with a capacity of up to 17,000, and remained in use until the Roman period. It fell into decay during the Byzantine era and was not identified, excavated, and restored to its current state until the nineteenth century.
- Herod Atticus Odeon - The Odeon of Herodes Atticus is a stone Roman theater structure located on the southwest slope of the Acropolis of Athens. Completed in 161 AD, it was renovated in 1950.
- Arch of Hadrian - The Arch of Hadrian, commonly known in Greek as Hadrian’s Gate, is a monumental gateway resembling a Roman triumphal arch. It spanned an ancient road from the center of Athens, Greece, to the complex of structures on the eastern side of the city, including the Temple of Olympian Zeus.
- Temple of Olympian Zeus - Between the Acropolis and the Ilisos River lie the remains of the Olympian Zeus Temple (now known as the Pillars of Olympian Zeus), one of Athens’ most significant and oldest shrines. The site still imparts a sense of grandeur to visitors.
- Panathenaic Stadium - Visit the Panathenaic Stadium, where the first modern Olympic Games were held in 1896.
- Lykavittos (Mount Lycabettus) - Journey into the historical center of the city and ascend the highest hill of Athens, Lycabettus Hill, offering the best panoramic view of the city, from the Acropolis hill to the Aegean Sea.
- Tomb of the Unknown Soldier - Witness the changing of the guard (Euzones) in front of the old palace, now the Parliament House, above Athens’ central square.
- Plateia Syntagmatos - Syntagma Square (Constitution Square) is the central square of Athens. Named after the Constitution that Otto, the first King of Greece, was compelled to grant following a popular and military uprising on 3 September 1843. It is located in front of the 19th-century Old Royal Palace, housing the Greek Parliament since 1934. Syntagma Square is the most important square of modern Athens from both a historical and social perspective, at the heart of commercial activity and Greek politics. The name Syntagma also refers to the neighborhood surrounding the square.
- The Academy of Athens - The Academy of Athens is Greece’s national academy and the highest research institution in the country. Established in 1926, it operates under the supervision of the Ministry of Education. The Academy’s main building is a major landmark of Athens.
- National Library of Greece - The National Library of Greece is located near the center of Athens. Designed by Danish architect Theophil Freiherr von Hansen, it is part of his renowned Trilogy of neo-classical buildings, including the Academy of Athens and the original building of the Athens University. It was founded by Ioannis Kapodistrias.
- National and Kapodistrian University of Athens - The University of Athens has been continuously operating since its establishment in 1837 and is the oldest higher education institution of the modern Greek state and the first contemporary university in both the Balkan Peninsula and the Eastern Mediterranean. Today, it is one of the largest universities by enrollment in Europe, with over 69,000 registered students.
The University of Athens was founded on 3 May 1837 by King Otto of Greece and was named in his honor, Othonian University. It was the first university in the liberated Greek state and in Southeast Europe. It was also the second academic institution after the Ionian Academy. This fledgling university consisted of four faculties: Theology, Law, Medicine, and Arts (including applied sciences and mathematics). During its first year, the institution was staffed by 33 professors, with courses attended by 52 students and 75 non-matriculated “auditors.”
- Plaka - The old historical neighborhood of Athens, nestled around the northern and eastern slopes of the Acropolis, features labyrinthine streets and neoclassical architecture. Plaka is built atop the residential areas of ancient Athens. Known as the “Neighborhood of the Gods” due to its proximity to the Acropolis and numerous archaeological sites, it is a delightful place for an authentic Greek lunch.
