This city was founded when Akhenaten departed from Egypt’s traditional religious practices to exclusively worship the sun disk Aten, marking one of the earliest known instances of monotheism in history. It is also the place where Akhenaten’s son, the young King Tutankhamun, spent his early years before the city was abandoned and largely erased from official records following Akhenaten’s death. Presently, the site features the remnants of the Great Temple of Aten, royal tombs carved into the eastern cliffs, and boundary stelae that define the city’s original borders. • Beni Hassan - Beni Hassan is a collection of rock-cut tombs hewn into limestone cliffs overlooking the Nile, constructed for regional governors during Egypt’s Middle Kingdom (circa 2000–1900 BCE). These tombs are notable for their wall art, which includes rare and detailed depictions of everyday life, such as wrestling, hunting, agriculture, and dance. This offers a more intimate view of ancient Egyptian life compared to the religious and royal imagery typically found at other sites. The columned facades of the tombs are also regarded as architectural forerunners to the later Greek Doric temple design.
