• Monastery of St. Simeon - This monastery was named St. Simeon by archaeologists and travelers, although earlier Arabic and Coptic texts referred to it as Anba Hatre (also known as Hidra, Hadri, Hadra). This name honors an anchorite who was appointed as the bishop of Syene (modern-day Aswan) by Patriarch Theophilus (385-412 AD). Anba Hatre married at eighteen, but tradition holds that a funeral procession shortly after his wedding inspired him to commit to chastity and become a disciple of Saint Baiman. After eight years of ascetic training under his mentor, he retreated to the desert to study the life of Saint Antony. He passed away during the reign of Theodosius I.
