- Aswan Market - Day 1
ASWAN’S MONASTERIES, Island of Plants, AND Nubian Village
Upon arrival at Aswan airport or station, our agent will be there to greet you with a sign. Your journey begins with a Coptic tour in Aswan. First, you’ll visit The Monastery of St. Simeon, one of the oldest and largest Coptic Orthodox monasteries, dating back to the sixth century. Originally named “Anba Hadra Monastery,” it was restored in the tenth century and is situated on a rocky elevation, appearing as if carved from the rock itself. Capture some photos of this stunning exterior. Inside, you’ll feel as though you’ve stepped into an ancient fortress, with images of monks, inscriptions, and faded wall colors.
After a short break for lunch at a local restaurant, your next stop is the Cathedral of Angel Michael in Aswan. This is the largest Coptic cathedral outside Cairo and a popular tourist attraction. The cathedral features numerous domes, a large marble square, and is surrounded by trees and the Nile. The exterior is modern, while the interior retains an ancient style, adorned with Arab inscriptions and Coptic paintings.
Following this, you’ll check in at your hotel in Aswan and have lunch. Post-lunch, you’ll visit the Island of Plants, one of the world’s oldest gardens, home to many rare trees and plants. Then, you’ll head to the Nubian village, where the Nubians live along the Nile. Known for their deep religious beliefs and practices, including crocodile breeding and henna drawing, you’ll also see Nubian schools and learn about their unique alphabet.
Return to the hotel for the night.
Day 2
Abu Simbel, the High Dam, the Unfinished Obelisk, and Philae Temple
Early in the morning, check out from the hotel and leave your luggage at the reception. Your first destination is Abu Simbel, a magnificent temple built during the reign of King Ramses II to promote Egyptian religion and showcase the king’s pride. Your guide will provide an engaging explanation of the temple’s interior.
Return around 12:30 PM to collect your luggage and enjoy lunch at a local restaurant. After lunch, visit the High Dam, the Unfinished Obelisk, and Philae Temple with your Egyptian guide.
The Aswan High Dam, constructed during Gamal Abdel Nasser’s era with Soviet assistance, is a significant structure that controls water flow and mitigates Nile flooding, also generating electricity. It’s a notable tourist attraction in Aswan.
The Unfinished Obelisk, made of pink granite, is located in a quarry near Aswan on the eastern shore of the Nile. If completed, it would have stood about 41 meters tall and weighed around 1168 tons.
Finally, visit Philae Temple, originally built to worship the goddess Isis. The name Philae is derived from Greek, meaning “beloved” or “granules,” while its Arabic name comes from the myth of Anas found in the tales of One Thousand and One Nights.
Transfer to Aswan train station, airport, or hotel for the end of the tour and final departure.
