- Abu Simbel Temple Complex - Upon arrival at Abu Simbel, an Egyptology tour guide will share the fascinating history of the two remarkable temples. These temples were carved by King Ramses II (1279 B.C), with the grand temple dedicated to himself and the smaller one to his wife, Nefertari. The temples were first discovered in 1813 A.D by Swiss explorer Burchard, and fully revealed in 1917 A.D by Italian traveler Belzoni. Ramses II’s temple is a rock-cut structure featuring four colossal statues of the king seated on Egypt’s throne, created to celebrate his birthday and coronation. Nefertari’s temple, a stunning smaller temple, was dedicated by the king to his beloved Nubian wife. It boasts a large facade with six massive statues, followed by a colonnade and sanctum. The vibrantly decorated pillars highlight the queen’s connection with her favored goddess, Hathor.
