- Museo Diocesano e Cripta di San Rufino - Located in Assisi next to the Cathedral of San Rufino, the Diocesan Museum and Crypt of San Rufino is steeped in history and sacred art. The museum is set in medieval rooms, including decorated chambers and ancient cloisters, showcasing sacred artworks from the cathedral and local churches.
- Chiesa Nuova di San Francesco Convertito - This sanctuary marks the traditional birthplace of Saint Francis. In 1615, the Friars Minor, with financial aid from Philip III, King of Spain, transformed the site into a church, initiating community life and liturgical celebrations.
- Rocca Maggiore - The Rocca di Assisi is a fortified complex comprising two main structures: the Rocca Maggiore and the Rocca Minore, also known as Cassero di Sant’Antonio. Both structures are crafted from Assisi’s characteristic pink stone.
- Piazza del Comune - This square is the convergence point for all main roads from the city gates. Built on an ancient Roman Forum, it served as a public space and hub for political and social activities. During the Middle Ages, key public buildings like the Temple of Minerva, the first seat of the Municipality of Assisi, the Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo, and the Torre del Popolo were established here.
- Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo - Constructed at the end of the 13th century, this palace was designed as the seat of the Capitano del Popolo, a figure representing the power of the Municipality of Assisi. The Capitano was tasked with maintaining order and administering justice, playing a pivotal role in the city’s medieval politics.
- Roman Forum and Archaeological Museum - The archaeological site of the Roman Forum of ancient Asisium lies beneath the current Piazza del Comune, discovered through excavations by a French architect in the early 19th century. Visitors can access it via the crypt of the former Church of San Niccolò on Via Portica.
- Oratorio dei Pellegrini - Built in 1457 by the brotherhood of Sant’Antonio Abate and San Giacomo, this oratory was created to enable pilgrims staying at the nearby hospital to partake in religious services. The interior features a square layout, a cross vault, and frescoed walls.
- Basilica superiore di San Francesco d’Assisi - Following Saint Francis’s death in 1226, a basilica was promptly commissioned to house his relics. On July 15, 1228, Pope Gregory IX, a friend of Saint Francis, canonized him and laid the basilica’s first stone on a hill near Assisi, to the north. Discover this remarkable structure!
