- Al Salt - Begin your journey with a hotel pick-up in Dead Sea, traveling in a private leisure vehicle with an English-speaking driver who also serves as your guide. Head north to the ancient city of As-Salt, a UNESCO World Heritage site, once considered as a potential capital of Jordan. Nestled on hills, As-Salt was governed by the Romans and Byzantines before flourishing under Ottoman rule from the 1890s to the 1920s. Today, it is a harmonious blend of Christian and Muslim communities, with mosques and churches coexisting peacefully. Meet a local guide and embark on the “Harmony Trail” to experience the unique interreligious harmony and coherence within As-Salt’s neighborhoods. The trail showcases the longstanding unity and community spirit, reflected in the peaceful coexistence of mosques and churches. As you explore, observe the Islamic and Christian symbols and inscriptions that adorn the architecture of historic homes and places of worship.
- Abu Jaber Museum - Discover downtown As-Salt by starting at the Historic Old Salt Museum, located in the Abu Jaber House, a stunning mansion that epitomizes the city’s prosperity at the end of the 19th century. This mansion has been transformed into the Historical Old Salt Museum, highlighting the city’s golden age. Continue to Al Ain Plaza, As-Salt’s historic downtown, surrounded by Hammam Street, Al-Eskafyeh, and Al-Khayateen stairs. Enjoy watching locals play Mangaleh, a beloved game in As-Salt passed down through generations. Visit the Great Mosque, once the oldest mosque in As-Salt, originally built in the 13th century and reconstructed in 2007 in Al Ain Plaza, showcasing a blend of modern and traditional architecture. As a town that values interfaith coexistence, the mosque’s stairs lead to the Church of the Good Shepherd.
- Al Salt - Proceed to The English Complex, established in 1849, which served as a center for various activities. This complex included a school for children, Jordan’s first hospital, the Church of the Good Shepherd, and a school for religious education. It provided medical care during the two world wars, Palestinian revolutions, and the significant earthquake that hit the city in 1927.
- Al Salt - Visit the notable houses of Fatima Al Zoubi or Al Adham, offering a home experience of Neighborhoods & Gardens built in 1864, showcasing As-Salt’s urban economic development. Owned by one of As-Salt’s prominent families, the house has been donated to As-Salt Greater Municipality to serve as the headquarters for the As-Salt City Development Project. Continue to Al-Khader Orthodox Church and its shrine, the most visited site in As-Salt. Located at the end of Al-Khader Street, a winding road lined with diverse shops, this church was originally constructed in an ancient cave in 1682. Al-Khader Church is a place where both Christians and Muslims are welcome to pray. Proceed to the Small Mosque, the oldest standing mosque in As-Salt, built in the early 20th century. Situated at the end of Al-Hammam Street, the small mosque was constructed by mason Haj Suleiman Abu Al Hosson between 1905-1907, funded entirely by local community donations.
- Al Salt - Continue to the Roman Catholic Church and School, the first private school in As-Salt, welcoming both Muslim and Christian students and teachers. Enjoy free time to explore local independent shops, stroll through markets, and purchase souvenirs (at your own expense). Optional lunch at a local restaurant: City Balcony, Al Gherbal, or Beit Aziz, or experience a homemade meal for an authentic taste. Conclude your tour with a hotel drop-off in Dead Sea.
