Pergamon – Thyatira - Izmir (Breakfast)
Pergamon Ancient City - Travel to Pergamum, one of the Seven Churches of Asia [Rev. 1:11; 2:12]. Explore the impressive Acropolis, the Asklepieion, and view the Altar of Zeus, referred to as the “Throne of Satan” in the book of Revelation.
Izmir – Sardis – Philadelphia – Laodicea – Hierapolis (Breakfast - Dinner)
Sardis (Sardes) - Depart early for Sardis, one of the most picturesque sites of the Seven Churches of Asia [Rev. 1:11; 3:1-4], now known as Sart. Once the capital of the ancient Lydian kingdom in the 6th century BC, it is depicted as a dying church. Visit the grand Temple of Artemis and the Temple of Cybele, which later became a Byzantine Church. Also, explore the restored gymnasium and reconstructed Synagogue, and see the final stretch of the royal Persian Road from Susa to Sardis, built by Cyrus the Great, along with the “golden” river Pactolus. Lunch will be provided en route.
Laodicea - Continue to Laodicea, founded in the 3rd century BCE by Seleucid Antiochus II and named after his wife, Laodicea. Situated on the Lycus Tributary of the Meander River, it was known as Laodicea on Lycus to distinguish it from other cities with similar names. As the last of the seven churches, it held a significant commercial and logistical position at the crossroads of two major roads.
Hierapolis & Pamukkale - Travel to the healing city of Hierapolis, now Pamukkale, the “cotton fortress” where hot mineral water flows from the earth, creating pools, channels, and stalactites. The therapeutic waters were known to the founders of Hierapolis and Laodicea in 190 BC. In Hierapolis [Col. 4:13], visit the Martyrium of the Apostle Philip, where he was martyred during the persecutions ordered by Domitian.
Ephesus – Kusadasi (Breakfast - Dinner)
Ancient City of Ephesus - Journey to Ephesus to explore the ancient city, including the Basilica of St. John. The Apostle Paul preached to the Ephesians and resided here for three years, and this church received an epistle from him. Tour the remarkable ruins where excavations continue in this once-great city, founded in the 10th century BC. Walk along marble streets lined with magnificent public buildings, including the Baths of Scholastica, the Library of Celsus, the Temple of Hadrian, and the Theatre. The Temple of Diana of the Ephesians, another of the seven wonders of the ancient world, was also located here.
Meryemana (The Virgin Mary’s House) - Located on the Aladag Mountains, 5 miles from Ephesus, the House of Virgin Mary was declared a pilgrimage site by the Archbishop of Izmir in 1892 after its discovery. It is believed that Mary came to Ephesus with St. John in 37 A.D. and lived there until her death in 48 A.D. Pope Paul VI visited and prayed at this site on July 26, 1967.
The Basilica of Saint John - After visiting the House of Virgin Mary, proceed to St. John’s Basilica, where it is believed that the evangelist St. John spent his final years and was buried on the southern slope of Ayosolug Hill.
The Temple of Artemis - Conclude with a visit to the Temple of Artemis, once one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, before returning to Kusadasi.
Kusadasi - Arrive in Kusadasi, check into the hotel, and enjoy dinner and an overnight stay.
