The “Sillar Route” is a fascinating tourist path rich in history and vibrant culture, where visitors can explore quarries and the origins of sillar. The journey includes a stop at the Cantera de Añashuayco, which is still operational. Here, stonemasons begin their work early in the morning. Visitors can marvel at a vast canyon with towering ignimbrite walls, several meters high, created through the extraction process for forming the ashlars.
At this location, the history of sillar, its crafting, and its traditional uses are shared. The tour then proceeds to the “Quebrada de Culebrillas,” located 30 minutes from Añashuayco. Upon arrival, there is a 20-minute walk through a small canyon shaped by water flow, with walls ranging from 15 to 20 meters high. As the walk progresses, the canyon walls grow taller.
By approximately 13:00, the tour returns to the center of Arequipa.
