- Ponza Island - After a smooth 1.5-hour ferry journey, the group will arrive at Ponza Island’s port. There will be a short break before embarking on the circumnavigation of Ponza Island, with ample time later to explore the vibrant seaside promenade.
The group will board a smaller excursion boat for an early 11 AM departure, meeting the captain, crew, and fellow travelers, primarily vacationing Italians. After a brief safety talk, the adventure begins.
- Grotte di Pilato - The first stop is among the most breathtaking, featuring three grottoes hand-carved by the Ancient Romans into the cliffside at sea level, creating sheltered pools.
- Chiaia Di Luna - This smooth, moon-colored cliff is a beloved stop in Ponza. The tour leader will share the romantic legend behind its name. If sea conditions permit, there may be a swim stop here.
- Punta Di Capo Bianco - This striking white rock formation is composed of compressed volcanic ash. A long grotto runs through the cliff, and at noon, the sun creates stunning blue reflections in the water, illuminating the grotto. Adventurous participants can swim through the grotto if conditions allow, guided by the tour leader.
- Piscine Naturali - A popular swimming area accessible by land, the “Natural Pools” are naturally carved into the rocks, offering perfect swimming conditions.
Beyond this, Ponza boasts the beautiful turquoise beach of “Lucia Rosa,” where the boat usually anchors for a simple pasta lunch, freshly prepared by the captain and first mate in the boat’s small kitchen. Lunch includes water, white wine, and a perfect Italian espresso, served on compostable, single-use plates, cups, and flatware.
- Cala Feola - Cala Feola serves as Ponza’s second port for smaller boats and is the main area of a quieter side of the island.
- Cala dell’Acqua - Although Ponza no longer has its own water source, remnants can be seen in this cove, named “of the water” for this reason. Observe the tiny waterfalls trickling down the cliffside, remnants of Ponza’s natural spring, and the ruins of an ancient Roman aqueduct.
- Cala Fonte - Another picturesque cove best accessed by boat.
- Cala Cecata - This cove is rich in history. The group will float over the site where an American landing ship tank sank during a WWII storm, now a popular diving spot. View the remnants of a mine that once provided employment to the Ponzan people, marking a shift to a fishing and tourism-based economy.
- Cala Felci - Approaching Ponza’s northern tip, discover the colorful “Felci Cove,” where sulfur has painted the cliff walls a bright yellow, contrasting with the emerald sea. This is a favored swimming spot, and the group will likely anchor here to explore.
- Arco Naturale - As a volcanic island, Ponza’s soft rock is continually shaped by the sea. The “Natural Arch” is a prime example, a massive sea stack hollowed out to form a large rock arch, big enough for a boat to pass under.
- Spiaggia Di Frontone - The final stop before returning to port is the “Frontone” Beach, the island’s most popular beach, bustling with Italian sunbathers even at day’s end.
- Centro Storico di Ponza - Upon reaching the port and disembarking, there is a full hour to explore Ponza’s historic center. Enjoy the evening atmosphere, sip a fresh cold aperitivo, or browse the shops: there’s something for everyone.
Finally, the group will board the ferry back to Anzio port, concluding the day.
