Discovering the Ancient Heart of Anuradhapura
Anuradhapura, a city steeped in history and spirituality, offers a unique blend of ancient ruins and vibrant cultural heritage. As you embark on this weekend journey, the weather might play a role in shaping your experience, with partly cloudy skies and a chance of rain on the first day. However, this only adds to the mystique of exploring the sacred city.
Start your adventure with the Historical Tour of Anuradhapura. Available from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM, this tour takes you through the ancient ruins that once served as the capital of Sri Lanka for over a millennium. As you wander through the remnants of Jetavanarama, one of the tallest buildings of the ancient world, and the sacred Sri Maha Bodhi, you’ll feel a deep connection to the past. The tour also includes visits to the Abhayagiri Monastery and the Ruwanwelisaya, where you can reflect on the profound teachings of Buddhism.
Reviewed at 2018-10-03: A long but worthwhile day - We were warned it was a long drive from Colombo to Anuradhapura and an early start was needed, so we were in two minds whether to take this tour. But we are glad we did. Our driver was on time, the car was comfortable and we could catch up on sleep for some of the journey. The site is huge and we picked up a local guide and toured it by car, getting out at the main sites to look at them. The monumental stupas are impressive and the setting is beautiful. It was particularly interesting to see how the site is still an active place of worship with tourists in the minority.
As the day progresses, the weather might shift to intermittent rain showers, so be prepared with an umbrella or raincoat. Despite the weather, the serene ambiance of the sacred sites will leave you in awe.
Embracing Nature at Wilpattu National Park
On the second day, the weather is more favorable for outdoor exploration, with partly cloudy skies and minimal chance of rain. This is the perfect opportunity to embark on a Wilpattu Safari from 6:30 AM to 5:30 PM. Wilpattu National Park, renowned for its leopard population, offers a thrilling safari experience through its lush forests and open grasslands.
As you journey through the park in a private jeep, you’ll have the chance to witness the diverse wildlife, including elephants, sloth bears, and a multitude of bird species. The park’s natural lakes, known as “villus,” provide stunning vistas and a tranquil setting for wildlife observation. With the mild wind providing a refreshing breeze, you’ll find yourself immersed in the beauty of Sri Lanka’s natural environment.
The safari is not just about wildlife; it’s a journey through the varied ecosystems that make Wilpattu a haven for nature lovers. The private tour package allows you to explore at your own pace, ensuring a personalized and unforgettable experience.
