• Ruwanwelisaya - The Ruwanwelisaya is a stupa, a hemispherical structure containing relics, in Sri Lanka, held sacred by Buddhists worldwide. It houses two quarts or one Drona of the relics of Gothama Buddha, making it the largest collection of his relics globally.
• Jethawanaramaya Stupa - The Jethawanaramaya Stupa is a significant structure in the island’s Buddhist history, symbolizing the conflicts between Theravada and Mahayana Buddhism. After the Anuradhapura kingdom’s destruction and abandonment in the 11th century, the stupa was overtaken by jungle. King Parakramabahu renovated it in the 12th century, reducing its height to 71 meters. Although no longer the tallest, it remains the largest, with a base area of 233,000 m² (2,508,000 sq ft). Its construction involved approximately 93.3 million bricks, showcasing the island’s advanced engineering knowledge. The compound spans about 5.6 hectares and is believed to have accommodated 10,000 Buddhist monks. The stupa has an 8.5 m deep foundation and rests on bedrock.
