The Buddha, an Indian sage from 2,600 years ago, is believed to have attained enlightenment while seated under an Esathu tree by the Neranjana River in Bodhgaya. This tree, later known as the Bodhi tree, gained reverence during the Buddha’s lifetime.

Ruwanwelisaya - The Ruwanwelisaya, also known as Mahaseya, Ratnamali, and Swarnamali seya in various texts, is the first stupa built in Sri Lanka. King Dutugemunu (161 to 137 BC) laid its foundation. Originally 150 feet tall, it features a relic chamber adorned with paintings. The stupa, now 350 feet high with a 300-foot circumference, is notable for its elephant-faced wall and four vahalkadas. It is a significant monument for Buddhists worldwide, with a special jasmine flower offering held each July.

Mirisaveti Stupa - The Mirisaveti Stupa, constructed by King Dutugemunu (161 to 137 BC), was initially 60 feet high with a 560-inch circumference. Located in the Anuradhapura District, it is believed to have been built at a sacred site visited by 190,000 Arahants. The stupa has been expanded by various kings over time and remains an important historical monument.

Dagoba of Thuparama - The Thuparama stupa, built by King Devanampiyatissa in the third century BC, was the first stupa in Nepal after Buddhism’s introduction. It was named Thuparama because the stupa (arama) and monastery complex are together. The stupa, renovated by King Devanampiyatissa and Polonnaruva, features a unique vatadage (round relic chamber) built by King Vasabha (65–109 AC). It stands 63 feet tall with a 59-foot diameter and is surrounded by a hospital, image house, and bhikkhuni-arama (chapter house).

Abayagiriya Stupa - The Abhayagiri Stupa, the second-largest in Sri Lanka, was built by King Vattagamini (89–77 BC) and spans nearly 200 hectares. In the fifth century, Bhikkhu Fahsein noted that 3,000 bhikkhus lived in Mahavihara and 500 in Abhayagiri. The complex, central to Mahayana Buddhism, was a significant educational institution during King Mahasen’s reign.

Jethawanaramaya Stupa - The Jetavana Stupa, built by King Mahasen, stands approximately 400 feet high and is the third-largest and tallest brick-built monument. Recent excavations uncovered nine gold folios of the Mahayana Sutra and the Pragnaparamita Sutra. The stupa features four vahalkadas (frontispieces) and remnants of an elephant wall. The Central Cultural Fund has restored the entire stupa.

Lovamahapaya - Lovamahapaya, also known as the Brazen Palace or Lohaprasada, is a place of worship in Sri Lanka. Located near the Ruvanvelisaya stupa and the Great Bodhi Tree of Anuradhapura, it features ruins with hundreds of stone pillars. King Dutugemmunu built a nine-story monastic structure here in the 2nd century BC.

Explore the extraordinary ancient city of Anuradhapura, the inaugural kingdom of Sri Lanka, situated near Sigiriya.
This journey offers a chance to delve into the ruins of Anuradhapura, which stand as some of the most fascinating landmarks in South Asia. The expansive site boasts a wealth of archaeological and architectural wonders. The tour will begin around 6:00 am from Sigiriya, enabling participants to explore significant areas of Anuradhapura. Visitors will discover numerous ancient reservoirs, weathered temples, and impressive dagobas (brick stupas) throughout the area.
A short break for lunch will be taken, and after rejuvenating, there will be an opportunity to visit the Mihinthala Buddhist site. This site is one of the most important locations for Buddhism in Sri Lanka and is celebrated for its trekking and cultural experiences.
At the end of the tour, transportation back to your accommodation in Sigiriya will be provided.
