- Eth Pokuna - The Elephant Pond (Eth Pokuna) in Anuradhapura is a vast ancient reservoir from the era of the kings in Sri Lanka’s historic Anuradhapura Kingdom. It measures approximately 159 meters in length, 52 meters in width, and 9.5 meters in depth, serving to supply water to nearby monasteries. Its name likely derives from its immense size, suggesting it could accommodate elephants. This pond is a testament to ancient Sri Lankan engineering, showcasing the era’s hydraulic system ingenuity and resourcefulness.
- Moonstone or Sandakada pahana - Sandakada Pahana, also known as Moonstone, is a distinctive feature of ancient Sri Lankan architecture. It is an intricately carved semi-circular stone slab, typically placed at the base of staircases and entrances.
- Basawkkulama Tank - Among the most sophisticated irrigation systems of the ancient world, the earliest irrigation works in Sri Lanka date back to around 430 BCE, during King Pandukabhaya’s reign, and continued to develop over the next thousand years. The Sinhalese pioneered the construction of completely artificial reservoirs to store water, alongside underground canals.
- Main Refectory Of Abayagiri Monastery - The famous Chinese traveler monk Fa-Hien, who visited the monastery in the 5th century, noted that it housed up to 5,000 monks at that time. All meals for these monks would have been prepared and served at this location.
- Ruwanweli Maha Seya - The Ruwanweliseya is located in the ancient Sinhala capital of Anuradhapura in Sri Lanka’s North Central Province. It was built by King Dutugamunu (137 BC – 119 BC) and completed by his younger brother, King Saddhatissa, after his passing. The Ruwanweliseya is considered one of the tallest ancient monuments in the world.
- Sri Maha Boodhi Temple - The Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi is a sacred fig tree, or Ficus religiosa, situated in the Mahamewna Gardens in Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka.
