- The Plaza Central Park - This central park, or “town square,” is the vibrant heart of Antigua. It is encircled by the Municipal building, Palace, significant religious structures, and The Cathedral. During the Spanish colonial era, it served as the main gathering spot and point of reference. It remains bustling with activity day and night, filled with vendors and people throughout the day. On weekends, it becomes even more lively. It’s a fantastic place for people-watching or enjoying a cup of coffee or juice.
- Iglesia de San Francisco El Grande - After being abandoned, the church suffered damage from the earthquakes of 1874 and 1917. It was reconstructed in the latter half of the twentieth century after the Guatemalan state permitted religious orders to own property again. In 1960, the church was returned to the Franciscan friars, who initiated a debated restoration process, focusing on creating a structurally sound church. The visit is particularly notable for discovering the tomb of Pedro de San José de Betancur, Guatemala’s only Saint, a Franciscan monk who established a hospital for the poor in Antigua. San Francisco Church is a major attraction in the city and offers a chance to see a restored colonial church.
- Casa Santo Domingo Museums - In the seventeenth century, the Convent of Santo Domingo was among the largest in America, and the Santa Marta earthquake of 1773 nearly destroyed it. Gradually, Hotel Museo Spa Casa Santo Domingo emerged, where each corner is a page lost in time that combines with others to form a beautiful chapter of our rich history.
- Iglesia de La Merced - La Iglesia de la Merced is a historic Catholic church situated in the heart of Antigua Guatemala. Celebrated for its exquisite Baroque architecture, this church is particularly notable for the unusually low height of its two bell towers, a deliberate design to withstand the region’s frequent earthquakes.
- Arco de Santa Catalina - The Santa Catalina Arch is one of Antigua Guatemala’s most iconic landmarks. Constructed in the 17th century to connect the Santa Catalina Convent to a school, it allowed cloistered nuns to move between buildings without going outside. Along with the cloister and church nave, it forms the Antiguo Convento de Santa Catalina Virgen y Mártir. On clear days, Volcán de Agua provides a stunning backdrop, making this yellow arch an ideal spot for a memorable photo.
- ChocoMuseo La Antigua - At the Chocolate Museum, visitors will learn about the history of cacao, the cacao tree, and its importance in Guatemala. Choco Museo boasts its own artisanal chocolate factory that crafts chocolate from organic Guatemalan cacao beans. Visitors can sample a variety of chocolates, from pure dark chocolate to blends infused with local flavors like cardamom, cinnamon, and coffee. This stop offers an immersive experience in Guatemala’s cultural richness, exploring the characteristics of cacao, its global impact, and its evolution over time.
- Casa del Jade - Jade has been utilized for over 5,000 years in both China and Mesoamerica to create a wide array of objects, from ornaments and utensils to weapons and tools, due to its exceptional hardness and durability. It is renowned as a good luck charm and is recognized as the stone of eternal life, abundance, and hope. In our culture, jade has long been admired for its strength and symbolism, making it an ideal material for decoration, defense, or hunting. Guatemala is proud to be one of only four countries in the world with deposits of Jadeite jade.
