For those with extra time in Siem Reap and an interest in Cambodia’s recent turbulent history, Anlong Veng offers a fascinating tour. Located 125km north of Siem Reap in the Dangrek Mountains, which form the border between Cambodia and Thailand, Anlong Veng is notable for two main reasons: it was the final stronghold of the Khmer Rouge and is the burial site of Pol Pot. Although little remains of Pol Pot’s bunker, visitors can see the remnants of a house now overgrown with vegetation and marked with graffiti. While the province still contains many minefields, these are situated away from the town center, and experts are actively working on their removal. Guides can provide further insights into the past few decades and may even share personal family stories from those challenging times.
