Feathers and Fun: A Family Adventure in Montego Bay
Join me as I explore the enchanting Rocklands Bird Sanctuary and the vibrant highlights of Montego Bay with my family. From feeding wild birds to exploring historical sites and shopping on the Hip Strip, this adventure is packed with fun and unforgettable moments.
A Feathered Welcome at Rocklands
As soon as we arrived at the Rocklands Bird Sanctuary, nestled in the lush greenery of Anchovy, Jamaica, I knew we were in for a treat. The sanctuary, founded by the legendary “Bird Lady” Lisa Salmon, has been a haven for bird lovers since 1958. My kids, wide-eyed with excitement, clutched their little bottles of nectar, ready to make some feathered friends.
The air was alive with the fluttering of wings and the sweet songs of the Jamaican Oriole, the Doctor Bird, and many more. It was a magical experience to have these wild birds, unconfined by cages, perch on our fingers and feed from our palms. My daughter giggled as a finch delicately nibbled from her hand, while my son was fascinated by the vibrant colors of the Red Crowned Woodpecker.
After an hour of delightful bird interactions, our guide led us on a short walk through the woods. We learned about the local flora and even spotted a Barn Owl snoozing in the branches. It was a perfect blend of education and adventure, and I could see the joy and curiosity in my children’s eyes.
Exploring Montego Bay’s Charms
With our hearts full from the bird sanctuary, we set off to explore the highlights of Montego Bay. Our first stop was Sam Sharp Square, a bustling hub of history and culture. The kids were intrigued by the stories of Sam Sharpe, a national hero, and the vibrant energy of the square.
Next, we visited the Saint James Parish Church, a beautiful piece of architecture that offered a moment of tranquility amidst our busy day. The kids enjoyed the peaceful gardens, and we took a moment to reflect on the rich history of the area.
Our tour continued to the Richmond Hill Great House, where we were treated to breathtaking views of Montego Bay. The kids loved imagining what life was like in the grand old house, and we all enjoyed a refreshing drink while soaking in the scenery.
Shopping and Savoring the Hip Strip
No trip to Montego Bay would be complete without a visit to the famous Hip Strip. This vibrant area is a shopper’s paradise, and we had a blast exploring the colorful shops and picking up some unique souvenirs.
The kids were thrilled to find some local crafts and trinkets, while my husband and I enjoyed browsing the art galleries and sampling some delicious Jamaican treats. The lively atmosphere was infectious, and we found ourselves dancing to the reggae beats that filled the air.
As the sun began to set, we made our way back to our hotel, our hearts full of memories and our bags full of treasures. The Rocklands Bird Sanctuary and Montego Bay Highlights Tour was a perfect blend of nature, culture, and fun, and I couldn’t have asked for a better family adventure. If you’re looking for a stress-free, memory-making experience, this tour is a must-do!
