Exploring Dutch Heritage: A Family Adventure Through Windmills and Villages

Eager to explore the Dutch countryside and its rich history, I embarked on a small-group tour from Amsterdam, eager to experience the iconic windmills and traditional crafts firsthand.

A Journey Through Time: The Windmills of Zaanse Schans

As a museum curator with a passion for history and culture, I often find myself drawn to experiences that offer a glimpse into the past. The Zaanse Schans Windmills Tour was one such adventure that promised to transport me and my family back to the golden age of Dutch industry. Our journey began with a short ferry ride across the water from Amsterdam’s Central Train Station, a delightful start that allowed us to mingle with locals and enjoy the scenic views of the city.

Upon meeting our guide, Roxanne, we joined a small group of fellow travelers, which made the experience feel intimate and personalized. Our first stop was the iconic windmill village of Zaanse Schans. Here, we explored the inner workings of these majestic structures, learning about their historical significance and the vital role they played in the Netherlands’ industrial past. The kids were fascinated by the mechanics of the windmills, and I couldn’t help but appreciate the blend of engineering and artistry that went into their construction.

A Taste of Tradition: Cheese and Clogs

Our next destination was a charming cheese farm, where we were treated to a demonstration of traditional cheese-making techniques. As someone who curates interactive exhibits for children, I was particularly impressed by how engaging and educational the experience was. The kids were thrilled to sample a variety of local cheeses, including the famous Gouda, and even got to witness the transformation of a simple block of wood into a pair of wooden clogs.

While the process was more mechanized than the romanticized image of a craftsman with a hammer and chisel, it was nonetheless fascinating to see the precision and skill involved. The farm’s family-owned atmosphere added a personal touch, making us feel like we were part of a long-standing tradition. It was a perfect blend of education and entertainment, and I could see the excitement in my children’s eyes as they learned about these quintessentially Dutch crafts.

Exploring Volendam and Beyond

Our journey continued to the picturesque fishing village of Volendam, where we enjoyed a leisurely lunch and a stroll along the charming streets. The village’s history as a staging area for the East India Trading Company added an intriguing layer to our visit, and we couldn’t resist trying the local delicacy of raw herring with onions. It was a culinary adventure that delighted our taste buds and gave us a deeper appreciation for the region’s maritime heritage.

As we made our way back to Amsterdam, we stopped in a quaint town for a quiet walk and a taste of local schnapps. The Schipper Bitters, a spicy concoction, was a warming treat on a chilly afternoon, and it was the perfect way to end our countryside tour. Roxanne, our guide, was a wealth of knowledge and made the entire experience enjoyable with her engaging storytelling and quick wit.

This tour was a wonderful opportunity to step outside the bustling city and immerse ourselves in the rich cultural tapestry of the Dutch countryside. It was a day filled with learning, laughter, and unforgettable memories, and I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone visiting the Netherlands. Skol!
