Exploring Amsterdam’s Canals: A Cruise with Stories and Snacks

Drawn by the allure of Amsterdam’s canals, I embarked on an intimate cruise with Sebi Boat Tours. This journey promised not just scenic views but a deep dive into the city’s history and culture, all from the comfort of a charming 100+ year old boat.

Setting Sail on Amsterdam’s Canals

Amsterdam, a city that has always fascinated me with its intricate network of canals, vibrant neighborhoods, and rich history, was calling my name once again. This time, I was drawn to the promise of an intimate canal cruise with Sebi Boat Tours. As a former city planner turned travel writer, I have a penchant for exploring urban landscapes, and what better way to experience Amsterdam than from the water?

The day was perfect for a cruise—clear skies and a gentle breeze. As I approached the meeting point, I was greeted by Olivier, Sebi’s business partner, sporting a hat emblazoned with “SEBI Boat Tour.” The boat, Giuliana, was a charming 100+ year old vessel, painted in classic colors and equipped with modern amenities. It was cozy, with a small restroom and an outdoor deck, perfect for taking in the sights.

A Journey Through History and Culture

Once aboard, Captain Sebi welcomed us with a warm smile and a wealth of knowledge. As we glided through the UNESCO heritage canal belt, Sebi regaled us with stories of Amsterdam’s past, from the historic bridges to the iconic buildings lining the canals. His tales were not just informative but also entertaining, especially his anecdote about being part of Obama’s private canal tour in Amsterdam.

The cruise took us through some of Amsterdam’s most famous landmarks, including the Jordaan district, the Amstel River, and the old city. We even made a special stop to view the spot where Monet painted his famous “Southern Church in Amsterdam.” Sebi’s passion for the city was infectious, and his stories brought the history and culture of Amsterdam to life.

Culinary Delights on the Water

As we continued our journey, Sebi surprised us with a stop at his brother-in-law’s restaurant. Here, we were treated to freshly made Dutch snacks—cheese balls, spring rolls, and croquettes—that were simply delicious. Paired with a selection of drinks, including Heineken beers and fine wines, it was a culinary experience that perfectly complemented the scenic views.

The two-hour cruise flew by, leaving me with a deeper appreciation for Amsterdam’s canals and the stories they hold. Sebi’s tour was not just a boat ride; it was an immersive experience that combined history, culture, and gastronomy in a way that only a true Amsterdammer could offer. For anyone looking to explore the city from a unique perspective, I highly recommend Sebi’s Canal Cruise.
