- Gal Oya National Park - The Crossing - Established in 1954, Gal Oya National Park in Sri Lanka serves as the primary catchment area for Senanayake Samudraya, the largest reservoir in the country. This reservoir was created by the Gal Oya project, which involved damming the Gal Oya at Inginiyagala in 1950. A highlight of the park is its elephant herd, which can be observed year-round. The forest is home to significant Ayurvedic herbs, including Terminalia chebula, Telegraphia bellirica, and Emblica officinalis, known collectively as triphala. Initially managed by the Gal Oya Development Board from 1954 to 1965, the park is now under the care of the Department of Wildlife Conservation. It is situated 314 km (195 miles) from Colombo. Visitors are encouraged to spend time with the Asian elephants during their Sri Lankan safari. Picture yourself amidst the stunning wildlife of Sri Lanka when suddenly, an elephant appears from the forest.
The journey from Passikudha to Gal Oya and back to Passikudha should take approximately 4 hours.
