- Amman - Meet your personal English-speaking driver, who also serves as your guide, at your central Amman hotel and board your comfortable, air-conditioned vehicle. Embark on a full-day excursion to Jerash and Umm Qais, home to the remnants of two ancient Roman Decapolis cities — a group of 10 located on the borders of the Roman Empire in the Middle East.
- Jerash Ruins - Begin by traveling north through Jordan’s lush landscapes to Jerash, a modern city surrounded by the remains of the once-thriving Roman city known as “Gerasa” - Jerash. Greet your welcoming local guide at the entrance and enjoy a private tour of this magnificent site, one of the best-preserved Roman cities in the Middle East. Pass through the grand Hadrian’s Arch, the city’s main entrance, and admire the classic ruins laid out before you.
- Oval Plaza - Next, wander around this once-vibrant city to see highlights such as the colonnaded street, the Temples of Zeus and Artemis, the Hippodrome chariot-racing arena, and the Oval Plaza; an egg-shaped forum encircled by a ring of standing columns. As you explore, listen to fascinating stories about “Gerasa” during its prime. Discover how Alexander the Great conquered the city in the 2nd century B.C., and how later, local farmers grew highly sought-after fruits and vegetables to sell to the affluent Roman inhabitants.
- Umm Qais - After some free time to explore on your own, proceed to the village of Umm Qais, overlooking the ruins of another Roman Decapolis city known as “Gadara”. Enjoy the views from here over the Sea of Galilee and Golan Heights as you explore the Greco-Roman ruins, including the amphitheater, crumbled mausoleum, basilica terrace, as well as other theaters and treasures. Then, visit the town’s museum to admire some of the valuable artifacts recovered from the site, including mosaics and marble statues.
- Pella - Then, drive to Pella, the remains of a Hellenistic city, and earlier and later settlements. First mentioned as “Pihilum” or “Pehel” by the Egyptians in the 19th century B.C. Pella flourished when the Romans arrived, constructing temples, theaters, and baths. View the antiquities, some dating back more than 8,000 years. Return to Amman where your trip concludes with a hotel drop-off.
