The Gates of Heaven at Pura Lempuyang (Pura Luhur Lempuyang Bali), also known as ‘The Temple of a Thousand Steps,’ is situated at the peak of Belibis Hill (Mount Lempuyang), 1,058 meters above sea level, northeast of Mount Agung, in the Abang District of Karangasem Regency.
The exact date of the construction of Lempuyang Temple is not recorded. According to legend, when the earth was merely 70 years old, the island of Bali was unstable, experiencing daily earthquakes. The god Pacupati, residing on Mount Sumeru, observed this situation and instructed his three children to stabilize Bali. He dispatched Hyang Gni Jaya, Hyang Putra Jaya, and Dewi Danu to Bali to inhabit three distinct locations: Dewi Danu on Mount Batur, Hyang Putra Jaya on Mount Agung, and Hyang Gni Jaya at Lempuyang Luhur Temple.
