- Besakih Temple - Often called Bali’s ‘mother temple’, Besakih Temple is a magnificent complex of at least 86 clan temples and shrines located on the southwestern slopes of Mount Agung. Annually, over 70 celebrations take place at Besakih, as each shrine has its own anniversary. It is regarded as the largest and most sacred of Bali’s temples. Its elevated position provides breathtaking views of the countryside, including rice paddies, hills, mountains, and streams. Exploring the entire site can take a full day. Pura Besakih is unique as it welcomes devotees from all caste groups.
For the Balinese, visiting the temple sanctuaries of Besakih is a significant pilgrimage. The high location of Mount Agung lends it an almost mystical aura. Numerous stairs ascend the sacred mountainside, leading to various temples that differ in type, status, and function. Pura Besakih features three main temples dedicated to the Hindu trinity. Pura Penataran Agung in the center displays white banners for Shiva, the destroyer; Pura Kiduling Kreteg on the right showcases red banners for Brahma, the creator; and Pura Batu Madeg represents Vishnu, the preserver, with its black banners. While many smaller temples in Pura Besakih can be visited, their inner courtyards are often reserved for pilgrims and not open to the public.
