Unveiling Alexandria: A Day of Historical Discovery and Modern Charm

Drawn by Alexandria’s rich history, I embarked on a private day trip from Cairo. With seamless planning and a knowledgeable guide, the city’s ancient wonders and vibrant culture came alive, leaving me eager to return.

A Seamless Journey to Alexandria

The anticipation of visiting Alexandria, a city steeped in history and culture, was palpable as my wife and I embarked on our private day trip from Cairo. The journey began with a seamless communication experience with Pharaohs Tours, who ensured every detail was meticulously planned. The day before our adventure, we received a message on WhatsApp with our driver Kamel’s details, including the car registration number. This level of organization set the tone for what would be an unforgettable day.

Kamel, our driver, was not only punctual but also incredibly engaging. As we made our way through the Egyptian landscape, he shared fascinating insights about the regions we passed. His warmth and friendliness made the 2.5 to 3-hour drive feel like a breeze. We appreciated the thoughtful rest stops for coffee and snacks, which added a touch of comfort to our journey.

Upon reaching Alexandria, we were greeted by our guide, Naelah, whose passion for her city was immediately evident. Her knowledge and enthusiasm were infectious, and we knew we were in for a treat.

Exploring Alexandria’s Historical Treasures

Our first stop was the Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa, a site that has long intrigued me due to its blend of Egyptian and Roman influences. Naelah’s storytelling brought the catacombs to life, weaving tales of ancient rituals and the site’s discovery in 1900. The intricate carvings and the fusion of cultural elements were a testament to Alexandria’s rich history.

Next, we visited the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, a modern marvel that pays homage to the ancient library that once stood as a beacon of knowledge. The architecture alone was awe-inspiring, and Naelah’s insights into its role as a cultural hub today added depth to our visit. The library’s collection of museums and exhibitions offered a glimpse into Egypt’s storied past and vibrant present.

The Citadel of Qaitbay, our third stop, stood proudly on the Mediterranean coast. Built in the 14th century, it was a formidable fortress against the Ottomans. Naelah’s vivid descriptions of its history and strategic importance made the stones seem to whisper tales of battles long past. The views of the sea from the citadel were breathtaking, a reminder of Alexandria’s enduring connection to the Mediterranean.

A Taste of Alexandria

Our final stop was the National Museum of Alexandria, where we delved into the city’s diverse historical tapestry. From Pharaonic artifacts to pieces from the Roman, Byzantine, and Islamic eras, the museum was a treasure trove of history. Naelah’s ability to connect these artifacts to the broader narrative of Alexandria’s past was truly impressive.

Lunch was a delightful affair, set against the backdrop of the Mediterranean Sea. The fresh seafood and local delicacies were a feast for the senses, and the view was nothing short of spectacular. As we dined, Naelah shared stories of Alexandria’s culinary traditions, adding yet another layer to our understanding of the city.

As we made our way back to Cairo, I reflected on the day’s experiences. Alexandria had captivated us with its blend of ancient history and modern vibrancy. Naelah’s guidance had been invaluable, and her love for her city was evident in every story she shared. For those considering a visit, I echo her sentiment: spend more than a day if you can, for Alexandria is a city that deserves to be savored.
