- Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa - The first destination in this historic city is the catacombs, the largest Roman cemetery, featuring three levels carved into the rock from the 1st or 2nd century.
- Serapeum of Alexandria - Known as the “Pompey Pillar,” this is Egypt’s most esteemed memorial column. Crafted from solid red granite, it stands approximately 28 meters tall with a base diameter of 2.7 meters. An inscription in Greek adorns the upper western side, honoring Emperor Diocletian for his dedication to justice and his role as Alexandria’s protector. It also acknowledges Postumus, the Prefect of Egypt, who supervised the monument’s construction. The Pompey Pillar is a testament to Egypt’s rich heritage and enduring legacy.
- Bibliotheca Alexandria - The Library of Alexandria was one of the ancient world’s most renowned and influential libraries. Built in the third century BC by Ptolemy I Soter, it was located in Alexandria, Egypt. The library was designed to house an extensive collection of books and manuscripts, including works on philosophy, mathematics, science, and literature. It quickly became a center of learning and culture, with influence extending far beyond Alexandria. The library was said to contain up to 500,000 scrolls, making it one of the largest collections of knowledge in the ancient world. It was also home to several famous scholars, including the mathematician Euclid and the astronomer Eratosthenes.
- Qaitbay Castle - The Qaitbay Citadel in Alexandria is one of the most significant defensive strongholds in Egypt and along the Mediterranean coast. Built in the 15th century A.D., it was crucial to Alexandria’s fortifications. The Citadel is located at the entrance of the eastern harbor on the east point of Pharos Island. It was constructed on the site of the famous Lighthouse of Alexandria, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The lighthouse functioned until the Arab conquest, despite several disasters altering its shape. Restoration began during Ahmed Ibn Tulun’s time (around 880 A.D). In the 11th century, an earthquake damaged the octagonal part, leaving only the bottom, which served as a watchtower. A small mosque was built on top. In the 14th century, a destructive earthquake destroyed the building. An optional stop for lunch at the fish market is available.
