St. Mark, author of the second Gospel, is linked to Alexandria from the earliest Christian traditions, believed to have arrived around AD 60 and stayed for about seven years.
• Serapeum of Alexandria - Constructed outside the imperial capitals of Rome and Constantinople, Pompey’s Pillar in Alexandria is the only known free-standing column in Roman Egypt, not composed of drums. It is one of the largest ancient monoliths and monolithic columns ever erected, with a shaft measuring 20.46 m in height and a base diameter of 2.71 m. The single piece of red Aswan granite weighs an estimated 285 tons, and the pillar stands 26.85 m high, including its base and capital.
